I think Porsche Unleashed is the most refreshing racing game to come
along in a long time, so you couldn't be more wrong, IMO.

No, no, no, no, no, NO!  NFSPU ranks right up there with Viper Racing,
DTR, and, yes, it even approaches the GPL end of the spectrum in the
realism department.  Take a little time to read a few threads and
educate yourself on what the general opinion is here on RAS before you
sprain something jumping to conclusions.  Then, once you've got
yourself up to speed, bite your tongue -- but only after you eat those
words, of course.  <G>

There is one thing that is bothering me a bit. It's that turn in the
little town in schwartzwald with a gutter in the middle. It seems
like there isn't much difference in taking the turn on either side
of the gutter. Or am I just too careful?

That is just a no cd patch.  It doesn't fix or add anything to the
game. Other than the ability to play without the cd  (quite handy to
have though)

Agreed, PU is a whole other game entirely, most closely resembling the
first NFS (SE).

HOWEVER, I was slightly dismayed last night when I was watching a
replay and a cop performed one of those NFS:HS "slides" where the car
moves laterally without turning its wheels.  At least that doesn't
seem to happen very often.  I think the cops in the game are the ones
that break physical rules most often-- thankfully it doesn't seem to
happen with competitors in racing mode.

I did educate myself by buying the game.  And if you think it can be even
remotely compared to GPL in the realism department, then you have zero
credibility with me.  I have already stated here that I can see why some
people would find the title fun, but realism is certainly not its forte.

So when someone has an opinion that differs from your own, all of a
sudden nothing they say is worth listening to? GPL is a great game. So
is NFS:PU. You don't think that the realism in NFS stacks up to that
in GPL. That's fine -- everyone has their opinion. Others have
opinions that are different from yours and they are JUST as valid as
yours are. Stop being so closed-minded....

by jbo.. » Fri, 14 Apr 2000 04:00:00

If realism isn't its forte, then NFSPU is EA's bastard stepchild,
because it's FAR too realistic to qualify as a simple "arcade racer."
It's definitely not GPL, but, then again, I haven't heard ANYBODY ever
allege that ANY Porsche from ANY era handled even remotely like a 1967-
vintage GP car.

NFSPU easily ranks up there with Viper Racing and DTR in the physics
department, which places it at the GPL end of the spectrum.  SCGT
should have done such a sweet job in the physics department -- if it
had, it might still be on my hard drive.

BTW, are you sure you're not confusing "difficult" with "realistic"?
NFSPU certainly lacks in the "difficulty" department to some extent,
but it does an EXCELLENT job of simulating a fast ride in a well-
suspended sports car on public roads -- not a bad accomplishment, even
if it's "not" GPL.

BTW, did you "educate yourself by buying the game" before or after you
asked, "Does this mean I was right that NFS:PU is just an update to the
horrid NFS III and the a-bit-better-than horrid NFS: HS?"  If you asked
that question before you purchased the game, then I am sorry if my
comments here steered you towards purchasing a game that you find
unfulfilling.  If you haven't done so already, make sure you work
through all the "Factory Driver" scenarios -- anything this game lacks
in the realism category is more than made up for by the immersiveness
of this portion, IMO.  Actually, I've found NFSPU to be MORE immersive
(for me, mind you) than GPL.  Not necessarily more enjoyable (that
would be a dead heat, I would say), but definitely more immersive.

Just my $0.02.

There are two flaws that bother me a bit.
1) Damage is light. You can drive away from a crash that should have
totaled your car. (It's an arcade racer, so I'm not surprised.)
2) Racing through that town in schwartzwald with the gutter in the
middle of the road. It seems like it's too easy to drive on the
side of the road with the wrong banking.
