How to Measure Frame Rate

It's kinda hard to tell you how to do it, when you don't mention what
game your using.  In ICR2 it's easy, just press CTRL-R to bring up the
framerate counter.  In Nascar things aren't so easy.  You have to use
the Auto Min/Max graphics settings.  The Min/Max settings determine at
when to start dropping/adding the Auto textures to keep the desired
performance.

What you do is turn all the graphics on, except for track texture which
you set to auto.  Then set the Min/Max both to the same framerate.  Go
out and run a few laps.  If the track texture stays on, then you're
getting higher rates than what you specified.  If the track texture
never comes on, you have the settings too high.  Just experiment with
values until the track texture flickers on and off.  The Min/Max
setting that achieves this is your framerate.

How to Measure Frame Rate

OK-

I've lurked long enough trying to answer this question, and looked for
a FAQ, but to no avail.  So I gotta ask, how do you know what your
frame rates are running at?  I set the Min and Max, but how do I know
what they are during play?  I feel foolish asking this, since it seems
so simple.

Thanks for your help.

How to Measure Frame Rate

Thanks for the reply.  I am running ICR2 win 3.1 with the 1.02 patch
on a Cyrix P120 with Diamond Stealth 64.

I have tried pressing "ctrl" and "R" during practice and a race, but
nothing ever shows.  Am I doing it at the wrong time?  Do I need to
have another screen up?  Maybe it is just in the WIN95 or rendition
version?

I have also now tried your other method, and am startled at the lousy
frame rates I was getting with the graphics on.  I was living in
ignorant bliss.  I never realized what 25-30 fps even looked like.
Guess that's why I was always frustrated in traffic that the cars
seemed to dart around so much, maybe this was because of my lousy
frame rate?

Thanks again for your reply, you have been very helpful in this
newsgroup.

That's probably because I should have said ALT-R, sorry.

You never know what your missing until you see it.  I know what 30fps
looks like, and I'm not satisfied with much less (I've been spoiled).
On my p120 I run Nascar in regular old VGA because SVGA is just too
slow.  Anything under 20fps is noticeably choppy to me, and under 15 is
just unplayable.  At low framerates, the cars move quite a distance
from frame to frame, making it difficult to pinpoint their locations.

No problem, I'm glad to be of help.

I think it's Alt-F in non-Rendition ICR2 ...
