So-called "GPL grip cheat"?!?!?

So-called "GPL grip cheat"?!?!?

GPL has no cheats, right? So, I load up the "Cheatbook" from the
Christmas 2001 issue of PC Gamer (UK), and what do I see? "Gran[sic]
Prix Legends".

So I click on it, expecting to see something like the Engine Swapper,
and I see "Super grip cheat", activated by typing a certain word on the
main menu ("you have to type it fast" says the info).

Please tell me this is a hoax. I assume it is, but...

It's not a hoax. You have to type "Make my car drive just like a modern F1
Ferrari" while the menu is loading. Case is significant, you have to get it
exactly right the first time. You have 2 seconds to type it and it isn't
displayed on the screen while you type.

What, you expected it to be easy? This is GPL!

GPL, who knows....................<G>

It was a joke from ages ago, it must have found it's way into PC Gamer
without them checking it, a bit like Bert ending up on the Bin Laden poster
:-)))

I can't get it to work in the main menu. Attempting a few more combinations,
but it sounds like BS.

Probably so. Actually, if you look at a selection of racing sims on
that database, quite a few of them seem very dodgy. Try GP3, for
example.

You assume correctly. Load of old bollocks.

However -it is not true to suggest that it's impossible to cheat in GPL. If
you wanted to badly enough - you could.

Yes you 'could' but it would be fairly obvious looking at replay anlyser if
someone increased their power or grip levels with the new traction circle
tool. One thing I've noticed about the fast guys compered to me (about a
second a lap down) they don't pull more G's just more concistant G's all the
way trough corners.

But with lots of patience and a Hex editor I'm sure you 'could' cheat.

I knew it........I knew I was right!  I knew all the fast guys cheated in
GPL........I just "felt it in my bones!"  "Bones" never lie!

I feel so much better about my 1:16's at Watkins Glen now.......(that's my
PB in the Lotus at WG......I can't do better than a 1:18 in the Eagle or
Ferrari....never tried the other cars)......now I know anyone who beats me
is cheating!  Finally, I can start serious work on my GPL-Rank.....ohhh
goodie!

Thank you David Buttery for exposing the entire GPL and VROC community as
the cheaters that they are!

I think I'm gonna take the day off from work and celebrate!

Regards,

Tom Pabst

Well, of course. Unless all programming becomes impossible[1], that
will always be the case.

[1] Now that I come to think of it... try typing "SSSCA" into Google.
Scary. And insane. And bonkers. Politicians will love it.
