WinVROC lockups

by Jason Faga » Mon, 15 May 2000 04:00:00

I have a 768/128 DSL connecton, I ping in the 80-100 range to Quake2
servers.  I have hosted 7 players with good comments from all invloved
regarding connection.

I am experienceing occasional though complete lockups when loading VROC or
exiting a race, and going back into VROC.  Basically anytime you are hearing
'hold on to your butt' it is prone to lockup.  Probably about 1 in 5,
transisitons or loading it, it will lock forcing a reset switch.  Also
occasionally it fails to connect to the VROC server though my connection,
all other games etc are working fine!

Anyone have any comments?

Regards,
Jason

Some don't agree with me, but, I have found a bit more stability by
disabling the ***wave file. Go into your WinVroc folder and rename
Startup.wav to disable it.

Well let me join the bandwagon. For weeks now I've been experiencing Blue
Screen Of Death (BSOD), sometimes, when entering or leaving VROC. I've
reinstalled WIN98 twice. I have an SDSL line, 416kbps up and downstream.  I
have all the latest patches and DX7.0a. I'm getting tired of rebooting
because after I clear the BSOD, I can still use my computer but I can't get
into VROC. It just won't connect to VROC after the BSOD unless it reboots.
I've heard this before from some people. I thought my problems were over
when I reinstalled WIN98 but it's still the same.
BTW I don't even use the startup.wav (hold onto ur butt).  I just renamed it
and it  is ignored.  That;s all for now dudes...let's hope someone can find
a solution. It seems weird that so many people aare getting the same
problem, at the same time.

I experienced the same problem here using Winvroc.
To avoid system crashing when starting Winvroc, make sure the "Toggle Chat
Connection" is disabled when leaving Winvroc.
No problems occur since the Chat is disabled.

Yeah, I have the same problem.  Occasionaly (but often enough to be
annoying), whenever I exit from GPL, it locks up.  If I load GPL it is fine,
but through WinVROC it is prone to crashing.  I have a 10Mbs LAN connection
to the net, and hosting 20 players works fine most times, but again,
occasionaly they will all get disco'd and my computer will lock forcing a
reset.

I haven't tried any other games apart from GPL, so I can't say whether it is
GPL or my net card.

I have intermittant BSOD problems, too, with WinVroc and indeed I can
also avoid them if I do not use the Chat feature.  Wonder what the
problem is there...

When it fails to connect the VROC server this is mostly due to DNS
lookup problems: the nameserver for ods.org is pretty slow and often
needs up to one minute to process a DNS request. I suggest you make a
lookup yourself and enter that address in your vroc.ini. the current
address is 209.53.20.177 and I doubt that it will change often ...

Rename it?  Hell, I *deleted* it... :)
