Hawaii-Uart breaking my heart

Sorry for the bad pun.  I've been wondering if having an old 8250 uart
chip is having an effect on my ability to stay connected during races
on Hawaii. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
It seems that just recently I've been getting the boot out of races just
as the pace lap starts. In fact, I've been getting the boot out of my
null modem races  with the multi program every now and then.
Is it a question of latency? On Hawaii it's about .13 and at home it's
more like .08 with the null cable. Is it; the lower the number the better
connection or vice versa? And does the 16550 chip make the connection
more stable? Or is it the California to Massachusetts connection?
Sorry to ask such newbie questions but I haven't seen a faq besides
Eds' treatise on bandwidth that deals with the chipset.

Thanks for any info,

Gavel

As for the California connection, I'm in ***ia and rarely get booted
- but I do have a 16550 uart.  I've noticed too, that in the Hawaii
league races I'm in, that the guys out west seem to have a lot of
connection problems.  Maybe a different provider?  Good luck.

It's possible that the UART could be giving you a problem if you are using
an external modem. Also,, I'm pretty certain that you should never get
booted out of a direct connect race unless the other computer terminates
the session. If it weren't for that, I'd suggest looking into possible
modem or phone line problems. Also, limit your connect speed to 9600 baud,
you can do this by adding "&N6" to your modem init string.

Lower latencies are better, it indicates the amount of time it takes for a
packet to travel from your computer to the server and back. FWIW, I am in
California, and my typical latency is about 0.13 to 0.15. In the last
couple of months, I've only been booted from one race, and that was
apparently something in the phone system, because 5 other drivers were also
booted. I must've been booted about 10 times in 20 minutes during that
episode.
