Hey there,

so Nascar 3 is supposed to use an improved GPL engine? In that case, just
think of how good a system must be to run GPL with a full field (20 cars)
and with decent graphics settings.

Now we all know that a full Nascar field is almost twice as big. I doubt
there's a processor available that could handle this. No, at this point I'm
NOT looking forward to the release of N3...rather worried.

How do you feel about that?

Personally, I think that they would have the game engine tweaked up, so that
the game is playable

I can run with a full 20 car field in GPL and my framerate never drops
below 36 except at the starting line when it falls to 32.

I'm not worried... By the time Nascar3 ships, I'll have a much faster
machine than I do now.

I feel fine, and you?

If you need to draw more than 10 cars ahead, 10 behind then you've got
better eyesight than me ;-)

My Pii-333mhz, 128mb Ram, Thriller 8mb PCI, VooDoo2 12mb PCI, 21" ViewSonic
monitor cranks out a solid 30fps on "all" tracks at "all" times with "all"
graphics on with "all" 39 cars being drawn in N2.

Running GPL in 800x600 with 19 opponents, 50% on bias, all graphics "on" in
forward & mirror I get 12-17 fps at start and it quickly climbs to 37fps
(yes...I have seen it click on 37) when traffic thins out.  In 1024x768 that
frame rate drops to 10/12 fps at start and climbs to 30/32 when traffic thins
out. (bias down to 20% in this resolution).

I'll be looking for that 150mhz motherboard and 500mhz processor about the time
N3 is released.  Who knows what vid-cards will be the "rage" at that time.
Hey, its only money right?!?  I don't smoke or drink so my vices become few.

Maybe the Nascar 3  AI cars won't have the same physics
engine as the players car like they do in GPL.  After all
Nascars spend most of there time on ovals.
They may have a much improved physics engine over N2 but not
to the extent of the GPL AI.

says...

He's not talking about the AI's physics model - he's talking about the
AI's ability to think for themselves.  I would be willing to bet that
Papy backs off on the AI's self-awareness a little for the sake of
playability where N3 is concerned.  Having 38 other cars on the track
with the same characteristics as the GPL AI will most definietly have a
negative impact on the sim.

Andrew

With double file restarts, 10 cars ahead is 5 rows, in a start/restart
you need to see more than this, especially if you`re racing on TEN, but
then again you are perhaps on the front row :-)

Beers and cheers

Correct me if I'm wroung but I understood that it's the AI's
"physics" engine, not the AI "intelligence" engine that is
causing the Cpu load and hence the slower frame rates.

As you said though, either way it gonna but hell with double
the field.  Whats the point of having a 40-45 car field if we
have to cut most of them off from view. There is nothing worse
than seeing cars appear further up the field because you have
to set the graphics options only to draw 10 cars ahead, etc.
That kills the "big" field atmosphere.

I personally would prefer they push the Nascar3 project back and concentrate
on ICR3
or Cart2000 which would utilize the new physics engine to its full extent as
does GPL.
Its Time For A UpDated IndyCar Sim and move on from Nascar, after all, there
has already
been several Nascar releases. Lets get back to the fast cars on road
courses.

Yup, this is correct....and the physics engine will be even more complex to
account for the aerodynamics seen in the Nascars.  However, by the time
N2000 comes out it may be enough time that they will have tweaked, updated,
etc the engine enough that it runs better.

Actually if AMD gets its act together you may have 200mhz motherboards and
500/600 AMD K7s. :)
