I'm up to year 5 of the championship (8 in total), so it must be ok, as I'm
normally not into anything arcadish.
When I first bought the game, I used a french unlocking program to open
everything up. However, patch 1.1 killed this. Patch 1.2 is now out, and I'm
still locked. From reading the threads, individual codes from the first
release still work, but not the software unlockers.
Anyway, onto the game.
The first thing to do is to choose realistic mode. A warning will pop up
telling you that this mode is for "hard core" sim racers only. The reality
is that the physics are modelled somewhat realistically, but still "dumded
down" compared to LFS and the GTR demo. I found that the more pure the
racing car (open wheelers, GTs, etc) the more difficult, and thus realistic
the driving is.
This has a phenomenal amount of cars and tracks! At a personal level, I
almost shed a tear last night when I came across an obscure (on a world
scale) track named Sandown, in Melbourne, Australia, where many years ago I
qualified for my general certificate racing licence in a V8 commodore. I've
been living in the UK for the last 5 years, and it really made me homesick!
Each car does have its own unique character, and there is a lot of attention
to detail. The classic cars such as E-Type Jags have clunkly and slow
gearboxes, modern road cars such as the Aston Martin DB9 have faster boxes,
with lightening fast gearchanges available in the open wheelers.
The rally cars are pretty good, especially on the twisty street circuits.
However, I didn't enjoy the dirt rally tracks much - I just couldn't find
any rhythm.
The game is quite good as a training tool for younger drivers who haven't
driven many different types of cars before. The softer, street cars can need
some roll oversteer to turn in - especially the older cars, whilst the
higher performance cars really feel nailed to the circuit and need a tender
throttle and brake response.
As Andrew said below, there are so many cars and tracks that it just has to
be value for money to play around with, even though its not realistic enough
for me commit serioiusly to it.
Cheers,
Tim
