ICR2: Sears Point?

I used Gerhard's NASCAR->ICR2 converter, and, the *** that I am, I've
tried to run my Lola/Ford/Goodyear on Sears Point.

Has anyone been able to get even a DECENTLY stable car on this track?  I've
gotten a best lap of 1:29.910, but my car is VERY loose.  I can't even go
flat-out on the front stretch; I have to let up on the gas as I head into the
gradual left after the pit exit so that my back end doesn't fly around.  And
I'm running maxed-out wings!

Right now I'm trying to lower rear tire pressure to see if I can get better
grip, but I haven't seen much difference so far.  Also, I've made the rear
shocks fully soft to cut down on the oversteer (like the manual says) but I
haven't seen much effect there either.

I can see why real-life IndyCars don't race there; the guardrail on the right
side of the Esses are WAAAAAY to close!

Hints, URLs, and ftp sites welcome.

My best time is 124.560
First throw out that setup.
I think I imported one from another track like Laguna Seca.
The t1 wheel helps alot.
Remember 1.brake 2.coast and guide your car through the turn. 3. make
sure your car is straight before you slam on the gas.

I haven't raced much at Sears Point, but a general hint...you say you run "maxed
out wings".  Is that max front and rear?  You have to remember that taking front
wing *off* is like adding rear wing..so you might want to try that.  You may want
to look at your brake bias as well...move it a little further to the rear.

First of all :  I love the track !!! The esses with nearly full
throttle.....whou !! ;)

My best Lap ist a 1:16.907. I take the "default" setup: on every tire the
pressure 5 down, both wings max and the steering lock about 12 degrees.
Thats all !  I got the time with my joystick (my T2 is at the repair  shop
at the moment :). So I hope I could improve....
By the way, I get flat-out on the front stretch with the setup.
If you need the replay to analyse it with EDITRPY mail me.

I've managed a lap somewhere around 1:14.7.  What I learned to do was
simply baby the throttle.  I haven't totally eliminated the loose
tendency of the car, but I have minimized it.  Try this:

Front Tires:    34 psi
Rear Tires:     32 psi
Front Wing:     18 degrees
Rear Wing:      15-16 degrees
Front Shocks:   40-50%
Rear Shocks:    20-30%
Roll Bars:      1/3 of full firm

I found that softening the shocks decreases the response of the car
into the turns, but makes it easier to catch when it goes away.  My
biggest problems have been the last part of the front straight when
braking for the first turn, and the last right hander at the bottom
of the hill befor the pit entrance.  If I hit that one right, I can
apex at 150 mph.  Both areas remain very loose, however.  Throttle
modulation is the order of the day.

Just to follow up...

Thanks to everyone for their hints and suggestions.  I've cut my lap times to
1:25.780 (and that's with ~20 gallons of methanol).  I still haven't
implemented the less front wing idea yet, but my car is much more stable.  More
importantly, I now know how to drive the car around the course.

BTW, I'm currently using a joystick, but will be purchasing a steering wheel
system in the future.

I suppose in terms of the relative balance between front and rear
downforce it achieves the same thing, but in addition, adding rear wing
will slow you down whereas removing front wing will speed you up.

Then there is the effect on your brake balance, shock settings to
compensate different grip etc etc. Below is my qual setup with which I
can run mid 1:17s pretty comfortably and my best is 1:16.8xx. It's still
not easy to drive and requires some feathering of the throttle through
the twists after the S/F straight if you don't hit them exactly right.

Have fun!
John
