Any joystick racers?

The problem is, it is tough to use y-axis of joystick to accel/brake.
I tried using button1 and button2 for accel/brake but digital control
means I cannot control the amount of acceleration/braking.  The
buttons are fine for arcade racing games, since I'm always either on
full acceleration or full braking, but they are impossible to use for
sims like GP2 and F1RS.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thanx in
advance.

P.S. I used to have a T2.  But the desk in my new room makes it
impossible to use it.  So please don't send suggestions like "buy a
wheel."  I know some of you raced using joystick back in Nascar1 days
:)

I used a js for all my racing games until buying a T1 several years ago.  I
have just retired the T1 and, whilst awaiting a new wheel/pedal combo, have
reverted to the trusty old js.

Sure...it took a while to relearn it but in all the sims (GP2, ICR2 and N2)
I am faster through the corners than with the wheel and have no dramas with
acclerating/braking on the 'y' axis.

You'll probably find that it's a matter of time before you become used to
it.

Are you using a digital joystick?  I have no problems with an analog
stick - I really like the original Logitech Wingman (not the Light or
Extreme models) which you can still find pretty easily for $20-25US.
Nice heavy base, sturdily built, good accurate control.  No probs
braking and accelerating with it using Y axis, with N2, GP2, etc.

I always accel/brake with the buttons. Works fine for me. I have a
Wingman Extreme Digital. It has a gas lever on the base of the
joystick. I use that one as the clutch in GP2. If you do that the
wheels won't spin when you start, and if you handle it right you can
race withouth throtle help perfectly. The Same thing can be done with
a CH Flightstick (pro i think.) or other sticks with gas levers.
Remember to use control driven calibration in GP2 (it's a check box in
the advanced control method menu).
I haven't tried this in F1RS, because I can't play the damn game... I

Although I've been trying to get the hang of driving with a T2 for
the past few months, I am a long-time joystick racer.  I didn't like
the buttons or keyboard for accel/brake (OK for ICR1, but N1 and later
really *want* analog accel/brake).  I also didn't like having to
control two axes on the same stick.

My solution was: two joysticks (duh).  I've got a couple of cheap
joysticks (CH Mach I's, with the tiny sticks for precise fingertip
control, under $20 a piece) and a Y-cable (allows you two plug both
into one port).  I use the X-axis on my right joystick for steering,
the Y-axis on my left joystick for accel/brake.  (BTW, Steve Smith's
CART Racing book suggests that this is what some of the in-house
Papyrus hot-shoes also use.)

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Owing to being a poor old student, I am stuck with a joystick for racing
sims (I mainly run Nascar 2) I find that the forward/backward axis is
much better for accellerate/brake than buttons as I can control how much
I accellerate/brake...

Hey, that's a thought...  If you've got room for your pedals under your
desk, why not use the joystick for steering and the pedals for
gas/brake?  Try plugging your joystick into the T2's pedals and then
plugging the pedals into your gameport.

Ah...I never thought about that!  I know it'll look odd but I gotta
try that.  I'll fetch my T2 pedals when I go home for Christmas.  In
the mean time, I'm learning y-axis joystick acceleration/braking as
everyone suggested.  I'm getting better at it now.  What kind of
sensitivity/dead-zone setting do joystick players use?  I'm using less
sensitive setting than I used for my wheel/pedal combo.

if you can set the top of the y-axis to accelarate and the bottom of the
y-axis to brake, the buttons to upshift and down shift. this worked for me
in cart precesion racing.

I use a hybrid...

I had a T1, which was great, but I also liked flight sims and switching
joysticks was a pain and I didn't want to shell out the cash on a Joyswitch.
I have a MS sidewinder Pro and, being digital, it has some interesting
effects.  I Plugged my T1 Pedals in as normal (using the supplied adapter to
make the pedals J1 Y instead of J2 Y.  I the plug my SIDEWINDER into the
plug where the wheel usually goes.  With MS newest Sidewinder drivers, I can
do the following:

1. For flight sims, I select MS Sidewinder as the joystick in the ***
device panel.  This has the effect that the pedals are totally ignored, and
the SW acts in 100% digital mode (all 8 buttons+hat, all 3 axes)

2. For racing sims, I select CHFlightstick Pro.  The pedals become the J1 Y
axis, the main Joystick acts as J1 X.  This way, I can use the pedals to
accelerate and brake but use the joystick to steer!!!  (all 4 buttons, hat)
the J2 Y is the throttle and J2 X is the main joystick Y movement for some
reason.

All this without swapping plugs.  Joysticks are a pain when both speed and
steering are integrated together...Hard to change one without inadvertantly
effecting the other.

Later,

Rick

Actually, THAT's (pedals and joystick) the setup most of the Papyrus
hotshoes use...

You have a cool setup Rick. i should go out and buy some good pedals
cause I cant afford and steering wheel/pedal combo right now. I am doing
quite well with just the joystick but as you say "Hard to change one
without inadvertantly effecting the other."

very true.
take care all
