Dotson On Pole But U'Ren Extends NTT Spa Championship Series Lead

Circuit National de Francorchamps
"Nail That Track" Spa Championship Series Race No. 2
Tuesday, March 16, 1999

Lotus driver Pat Dotson took the Spa pole Tuesday night with a blistering
3:17.10, only to have his car fail to make it to the grid as another victim
of a locked drivetrain [Editor's note: Poor Pat's system locked as the cars
went to grid!] With Dotson missing in action, the fight at the front looked
to be between the Eagle of Chris Cavin (3:17.66) and series leader Marty
U'Ren (3:18.51).

And a fight it was! The two aces swapped the lead twice and, for lap after
lap, were never separated by more than a few hundred feet at speeds reaching
200 mph on this fast perilous circuit! Finally a pursuing Cavin, pushed a
little too hard through La Carrire and sent his Eagle into a slide even he
couldn't catch. With the irritated Cavin struggling to recover, U'Ren
vanished without a trace and was left to power to his second straight
victory and extend his lead in the points race.

Here are the current leaders in the points competition:

      1     Marty U'Ren        1700
      2     Jeff Eiland           1466
      3     Jack Rambo       1300
      4     Peter Marak       1297
      5     Francois Dubuc   790
      6     Scott Velez           732
      7     Mitch Alatorre       518
      8     Dave Swoboda    469

The winner of each daily NTT Spa Championship qualifier receives an
automatic
berth in Sunday's NTT Spa Championship Race. The remainder of the grid for
the Championship Race will be filled by the top point scorers in the series.
