What ports does GPL server use?

by Doug Gordo » Thu, 30 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I was unsuccessful last night in hosting a GPL race (VROC or direct by
IP). After some investigation, I found that it is because I'm using
Win98 SE's "Internet Connection Sharing" service. ICS can be configured
to open up specific ports for an application, so I should be able to
get it to work with GPL.

What I need to know is what port number(s) GPL server sits on, and
whether they are TCP and/or UDP ports. Thanks.

GPL uses the following (ranges of) UDP ports:
6968-6971
32000
32766-32786

Doug,

How you doin'? Long time no race.

I was never able to get ICS to work properly w/GPL myself. Not saying it
can't be done, but when I tried it, I would show up on VROC, folks would
just hang while trying to connect. After screwing around with it for a
while, I just went back to Sygate 3.1, which works wonderfully.

Sygate also seems to work better for the clients. My kid was unable to join
some games online when I had ICS up. Again, Sygate solved the problem.

Regards,
Gordon

Hey, we definitely miss you, GM. Someone passed me the other day in a
Ferrari with a yellow helmet and I was confused for a while as to who
it was :-).

I think that I can get ICS working now that I know the port mappings.
It's probably a moot point since I've pretty much decided to go with
multiple IP addresses for my PCs and eliminate ICS altogether. Both PCs
will have a NIC to the cable modem and another for internal home
networking usage.

Thanks -- this should do it for me. That's an interesting range of
ports. Apparently each client must be assigned a specific port, which
explains the 32766-32786 range.

You should get the patch from www.papy.com as this version has better
networking and firewalls and if you require it, usage of different ports.
Read the readme.txt file.  It has a section on the
ports that GPL uses.
