GPL I could only do in the 1:32's at Monza with a Ferrari and others were
doing 1:28s and less. Your kind replies kept me going and made me realize I
was actually doing okay. (Actually, right after my post I did hit a single,
high 1:31). I took the following week off from GPL practice to play with FF
settings in core.ini, which many of you are familiar with by now, and to
build a computer for a friend. The next week, on advice from 3 different
replies to my original post, I decided to try F3 and the Brabham with Ron's
setups. So, I thought I'd let you know that by the end of the week, I hit a
few 1:53s (certainly not record breaking, I know) and can run consistently
in the 1:54s and usually beat the AI drivers in a 6 lap minimum field race
at Monza. Of course, this is at the expense of racing only at Monza. I've
driven some of the other tracks, but not practiced on them. Also, like my
1st week with F1s, it was a full week, meaning as much as 2 hours a day, 10
full hours of practice to do this. I think going to F3s has helped. Its
harder for me to do 4 wheel drifts with F3s than F1s, but its easier to
practice squatting the car with the brakes while accellerating out of
corners. Also, the AI cars gain on me when going through Lesmos.
I'm still using the Ferrari wheel (and can't wait to try the Act Labs next
week) with these settings for damping and torque: damping 4000, steering
torque 2000 (sometimes 1800). Starting in the back of the pack, with these
settings I can beat the AI cars off the starting line and hold them off
through Lesmos on the first lap, then pull ahead slowly. With 2000 for
torque I feel less pull on the grass than with 1800, giving up some realism
for easier driving. Road feel is about the same and the wheel is smooth, but
light feeling.
The GPL community is certainly a great group of people. I posted my
core.ini theory and settings as a way to give something back to the
community. I actually started using them a week before, but was afraid that
posting something so different from conventional wisdom would only bring me
ridicule. I shouldn't have underestimated you. GPL is a hard game. It's made
more bearable by being able to share accomplishments with other players, and
I suspect this helps to perpetuate its popularity. GPL gives pleasure when
you make small achievements, and gives once again when you share these with
the GPL community.
So, who do you like in the Superbowl?
