ICR2 Disqualified Why?

ICR2 Disqualified Why?

by Dean » Sat, 15 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I was on the last lap of a 40 lap race leading by 9 seconds at Phoenix
when I clipped the barrier on the last corner. I slid into the pit lane
before regaining control. As I didn't have time to back up I drove over
the finish line in the pits (didn't speed) and was duly disqualified. I
know it wasn't normal behaviour but I'm puzzled by the disqualification.
Explanations?

You probably broke the speed limit when you entered the pits. Since there
wasn't time to serve the black flag before the end of the race, you got a
DQ instead. Not the way CART would have handled the situation, but
understandable, given that a computer can't make a judgement call on why
you were speeding in the pits.
