Where can I get a racing wheel for the Mac

by Loren Nerel » Wed, 29 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I'm tired of using my keyboard, and the joysticks I've used aren't any
better. So, I'd like to move up to a steering wheel but the problem is
I can't seem to find any for the Mac? Anyone have any ideas (other then
switching to a PC, can't afford to buy a second computer right now) or
leads on a new or used one?

Thanks in advance.

The Thrustmaster T2 is the only Wheel produced for the Mac (with ADB
port). Don't know if they still make it.

Otherwise wait until Logitech brings out the USB wheel (did they
already?). Should be no problem to attach to it to an iMac or b/w G3 or a
G4.

controllers and software would be available to ya..

I don't think they make it any more, at least none of the vendors I
have checked seem to have it, or even list it.

Unfortunantly I have an older Power Mac (7500) which uses the ADB port,
so it looks like I need to get a T2. Anyone know where I can locate
one?

If I can't find a mac T2 I was thinking as an alternative I might try
hacking a PC T2 by rewiring it for the ADB port. Has anyone heard of
this being done before? To do this I would need to know what the
differences are between the PC and mac versions. If it's just the
wiring then I would need to know what the pins out of the ADB port are
on the Mac version of the T2. I'd appreciate any info/insite given.

Take care.

There are USB cards for older PCI macs out. May be an option.

This is not a matter of simply "rewiring". The PC port is a "stupid" one
without intelligence needed by the device. All you will see inside the T2
are a pot here and there. The ADB bus (bus!) needs intelligence from the
device. Inside my T2 I can see small chip which handles the bus protocol
(yes, I have opened it 8^). There is a reason why noone else made a wheel.
(open your mouse, you will also see a similar controller).

There is an ADB to Sega (and other) input device adapter at:

It could provided someone has a USB wheel which suports the Mac. I went
to the Logitec website to take a look at the wheel you mentioned
earlier. Yes they do have a USB wheel out now 9called the WingMan
Formula Force) but the problem is that it does not have any Mac
drivers. So not really an option at this time.
Ahh, yes I was afraid of that, I didn't think it could be that simple
but I had to ask. Thanks for the info. I guess I'm back to square one.

Thanks for the info Barton. Did anyone make a wheel for the Sega
system?

It's unfortunate that they don't make a PC to ADB adaptor, that would
give me many more choices. Does any one know of any PC to ADB adaptors
like the MacEnjoy?

Actually I know of one and I already have it. It was made by Media
Vision and is called the PAS 16, a 16 bit audio card for the Mac with a
PC joystick port built in. But the problem is it's a Nubus card!

If anyone know of something similar but for PCI Macs or even just an
ADB adaptor like the MacEnjoy I would greatly aprciate the information.

Take care.
