Questions about NASCAR Modem Racing

by Brad Morga » Thu, 22 Feb 1996 04:00:00

I've got a couple of questions regarding Modem racing in NASCAR
(and INDYCAR 2) and one question regarding NASCAR versions.

I believe I've read that both players should be using the
same version of NASCAR.  I don't believe this is enforced.
Am I correct?

If the two versions are not the same, do the characteristics of
either the dialer or the answerer take precedence?  Again,
I don't believe so.

After resolving the version question,  I have another regarding
the weather conditions.  Is the weather controlled by the
answerer or can it be set independently at both ends?

As I understand it, V1.0 (and V1.1) of NASCAR allow higher
speeds at Taladega than V1.2 (and V1.21).  Is there a difference
between V1.2 and V1.21?  Is there a perceived difference because
of changes in, for example, the weather defaults?

I ask these questions because there are a group of us who are
starting to race via modems and it appears the some people
are at a distinct advantage over others.   I also have a friend
with NASCAR V1.1 on CD. I gave him a copy of NAS121.EXE but
then just installed 1.21 directly from my newer CD.

When NASCAR quit working recently, the solution at the time
(I wasn't there) was to reload 1.1 and install the track pack
so he ended up at 1.2 instead of 1.21.  It now appears that
he can't go as fast at Taladega as he could with 1.21.

Thanks,

Brad

Before someone asks, the "advantage" some people have appears to
be more than just driving ability or setup.  Both players on the
same machine are roughly equal.  Connect them together via a
modem and one is 5 MPH faster than the other.

We have also run some experiments using exactly the same
setups and see a couple of MPH difference between 1.2 and
1.21, and 5 MPH difference due to temperature.

We've had problems racing on different versions.

In both cases the answering machine sets all the prefrences and controls what's
going to happen.

As far as differences between speeds, my roomate and I, who race extensively
via modem 93-4 times a week), haven't realy noticed that (we're running the
same version). HOWEVER, we did notice problems modem racing at Indy. Only the
answerer gets to qualify. The caller gets the green flag but never the
checkered and always quals last without a time. We get this problem wether it's
ICR or Nascar.

AS an aside, another thing I'd like to see is some semblance to the carsets and
your carart during modem races. My roomate and I have a special car set we
designed for our modem series. Problem is, to get the proper car art, he has to
put his car as the number two in the car set so it'll show up as his during
multiplayer sessions, even though his driver info has to be with the first car
in the set. (answerer is always #1 car). This leads to a lot of juggling pf car
sets, etc, since we only have one T2 (ECCI CDS on order!), so we switch
computers everyother race,. This means four car sets to manage.
