VIA, SB Live, GeForce2 issues?

by JoeZ » Wed, 07 Nov 2001 05:01:53

I thought I saw a post one time saying there were some issues when using a
motherboard with VIA chipset, the SB Live and a GeForce card.....

I just switched to the GF from a Voodo 3 and now I have "scratchy" noises
coming through the sound in N4. Anyone know anything about this? Haven't
tried updating any drivers yet. Most of the items have the latest and
greatest.

TIA

If you are using EAX or 3D sound, disable it and use regular sound. Other
folks have said they had similar symptoms and disabling all the "fancy"
sound schemes worked for them. Don't know if this was just on Via based
boards or not, but appears to be the bug when "scratchy" sound is an issue.

My new system is on an Abit MB with Via chipset, GeForce2 GTS and SB Live
Platinum. I haven't had any problems at all with the chipset and these
cards. So far I've only installed GPL, N4 and F1RC. The one thing that
updating the Via drivers did, however, is fix my com ports.

Another thing that really helps clean up the sound (pops, clicks, static,
hisses) is using the SBL!'s digital output. I want to say SPDIF...is that
right?

P.S. I have a VIA chipset, GF2, and SBL!  No probs, but only install the CL
drivers, not the applets (their mixer, launcher, etc., compound, complicate,
and confound the same functions in Windows ME).

Here's a link where the problem is described.

http://www.viahardware.com/686b_1.shtm

Here's a quote from article at above link.

There are many possible answers to why the data corruption occurs. The most
common answer to the issue points to Creative to be at fault. When Creative
designed the SB Live, they didnt design it to support PCI Bus mastering,
therefore when in use, the SB Live hogs the PCI bus. More can be read about
this issue in WiNCs 686B FAQ.

The best cure is to get rid of the SBlive.

I guess that would be one solution, but there are a ton of SB Live users out there (myself included, SB Live MP3+5.1) that have no problems. It is generally a driver or a setting or a tweak to get things straight. These things are computers after all, lol, we have to bend on them a little bit to get them to run as they should.

Joe, just keep us posted. Those of us who haven't given up on the SB's will try to help as it will surely work for ya if we can get everything lined up...

Bend on them a little? Are you kidding? My computer demands frequent
***-sacrifices!

Replying to the post of Joe Z, yes you are correct.  There is a major issue
with Via KT133a chipsets and Soundblaster Live! series of cards.  When mixed
together, they cause data corruption and hissing\popping in music files.
There is an article at Via's website,
http://www.racesimcentral.net/;Although not all boards are
affected, mine, which is the Iwill KK266, was one of the more likely to have
the problem.

The solution in my case was to download the IDE Miniport Driver,
http://www.racesimcentral.net/;Also, as a
precaution, I installed the Via 4in1 drivers, version 4.35.
