Easy fix for 8500 in LFS

by Kari Ikone » Thu, 22 Aug 2002 00:58:40

I had same probs as many others have in LFS with their 8500 card. I tried
the AGP bios setting and even though fps did improved they still were very
poor in race. I installed Rage3D tweak 3.5 and started to fiddle around with
different settings, mainly directX settings and came  up with a fix that
enables me to drive with more than double the frame rate that the AGP bios
fix provided.! I now have my bios settings restored to normal. :)

1. In the tweakers 3D directX settings disable TCL hardware.
2 Reboot PC
3. play LFS

The main thing to do is to disable TCL and the reboot. You can turn it on
after reboot as it doesn't seem to have any effect (?) until reboot again
when
playing LFS.

Ya that seems to work.  Can't get it to run at 1280 though, locks upo when I
select it.

I recommend leaving T&L disabled also after reboot if you play many sessions of LFS as it seems to kick in  sometimes if you restart the game after quitting it before. The disable TCL + reboot works 100% to restore performance though.

Well it looks ok, nothing great IMHO, about the same as Rally Trophy.
But then again I only tried it a few minutes.  Has potential though for an
early beta.

When I turn off the TCL hardware the graphics are all messed up. I didn't
reboot tho.
How do I disable AGP acceleration in Bios? All I can find is diable AGP 4x
and disable AGP fast writes.

This would happen to me too sometimes, unless I rebooted. Try to reboot
after the disabling.

The bios fix involves turning down the AGP aperture size to minimum. In my
case it was 4Mb. However the disabling of the hw T&L and rebooting increased
performance to a
new level compared to it and I prefer keeping my bios settings as they are.
:)

Where do I get the Rage 3D Tweak from?  And what drivers are you using
for your 8500?  (I have an 8500LE....)

Thanks!
