Incremental "improvement" to AI
Possibly a track fix or two?
But not Martinsville
More eye candy
Higher system specs
Lower frame rates
Another $50 gone

C'mon Sierra & Papyrus, PROVE ME WRONG!

This is starting to look like EA Sports (Madden, NHL, FIFA, etc.) except
with a much higher quality starting point.  Ironically ISI is doing a great
job for EA with F1.  The 2002 version runs significantly smoother than the
2000 version and you can't even compare the two in terms of physics and
overall quality.

Papy needs some competition, complacency and a pathetically conservative
business strategy (from their parent firm) have combined to make them dull
and uninspired.  I long for the days when game designers passionately strove
for the next level instead of comfortably settling on the current one.

Let's hope EA's Nascar Thunder provides a needed challenge, it's EA's first
shot at a Nascar sim.  Of course, poor online racing can kill it out of the
gate for many of the *** crowd.

Probably all that and a gimmick they spent months on but nobody uses like
the replay theatre.

A useless victory lane wouldnt surprise me either.

With GPL Papy have undertaken quite a venture. They've revolutionized sim
physics, and have given us a sim that satisfies both in its theme (F1 1967)
and its level of difficulty the dreams of a fairly small and highly
specialised audience. And look how many years of fun and satisfaction that
group of buyers have derived from GPL - the GPL online and add-on community
is still buzzing.

I think Papy deserve to be given time to recover from that effort, both
financially and in terms of motivation before they venture into their next
passionate project?

I said Nascar SIM not Nascar ARCADE. ;0)  EA is apparently going trying to
appeal to the *** sim market for the first time so I thought it made
sense to say it was there first shot at a "sim".  I don't think anyone
considers Nascar Revolution a sim.

BTW, Thunder is a completely different development team (Tiburon) so let's
hope for the best.

I agree that GPL was a wonderful venture, but I consider it part of that
"bygone era" of game development.  BTW, how much time do you think they need
between truly ambitious projects?  It seems like it's been long enough.

Actually, the replay theater was not worked on for months just to hold up
the release and wasn't intended to be a big addon. Papy made this app in
order to produce the tutorials and decided to just include it in the release
as a 'bonus'. At least that is what I've heard.

What they really need to work on is all the BF bugs (NASCAR won't penalize
me for avoiding a spinning car at the S/F line, but Papy will if you pass to
the left...), track quirks (killer pace cars included) and getting the
netcode where a decent server and 32 decent connections will result in a
decent race (no more flashes and less warp, less lost laps due to warp). I
say no more eye candy until these and whatever the offliners want as so far
as the AI are fixed.

Depends on how much revenue the money-maker projects create, and how many
man-years are/were invested in the 'ambitious' projects. If the gap between
the releases of ICR2 and GPL is any indication, quite a lot of work would
have gone into GPL.

I'd also say that N4 and N2002 aren't that un-ambitious either. After all,
transferring their ultra-realistic GPL physics model to a sim made for an
audience that maybe doesn't want to spend that much time learning to just
drive the cars wasn't entirely un-ambitious either.

In the end it was a success, but I am sure there were voices asking whether
that would be accepted 'by the market'...

Have the Tiburon team released any other titles to date?  Looking for
something to hang my hopes on.  <g>

Tiburon is of Madden Football fame.  They replace Stormfront Studios (Nascar
Revolution developer) as EA's Nascar development team.  I normally would
expect little from an EA Nascar game but a preview from a fairly
knowledgeable guy at IGN talked about EA taking aim at King Papy.  The bonus
"ace" in Tiburon's deck is that they have ISI's F1 engine as their core
which is a hell of a nice head start.  Here's the link and an excerpt:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/362/362606p1.html

"Be thankful, ye legions of devote auto racers, this year's Thunder for the
PC forsakes all previous EA efforts and instead opts to take a few pointers
from the company's other marquee racing sim, F1. With the ISI engine in
hand, Tiburon is trying to make sure every detail of NASCAR from the physics
(F1 2002's telemetry data), to the feel, to the most minute of track
nuances, is covered. Indeed, the sights are set and Papyrus is targeted."

I'm hoping I don't see it. I hope I see something other than Nascar
papy game like CART 2003 or IRL 2003 or F1 2003 or a new GPL.

Somewhat in that vein,  I would like to be able to drive to and from the
garage during happy hour, I would like to be able to 'go behind the wall'
for major repairs.  I would like to have to sit through Hooters Girls
Autograph sessions.
