GPL Fast Laps?

GPL Fast Laps?

by Dean William » Mon, 20 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Hi.

Just downloaded GPL.  One word... AWSOME!

I have a question for anyone that has posted some hot laps at the Grand Prix
Legends Headquarters ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/ ).

What type of driving device are you guy using?  I am having a hell of a time
getting any good times because the realism is so good.  I am using a
joystick and using the trigger as the throttle, and when I let of the
accelerator, the back end gets light and the car goes snaky on me.

Check out the readme files on the FastLap board, they all state which
controller that has been used. I guess they all use Wheel/pedal sets:)

This is because your trigger is a digital switch, so when you use it
for the throttle, your throttle is either

a) trigger pressed = fully open, or
b) trigger not pressed = no throttle.

Because it is digital their is no "in-between" as there is with an
analogue device (eg:- pedals?)

So when you release the throttle it goes instantly from full to none
at all? In a sim such as GPL where smoothness, and skillful control
of the throttle is required, a digital throttle is just *not* up to
the job.

The back end is getting light because all the weight of the car is
instantly thrown from the rear to the front when you lift off the
throttle like that?

The *only* solution my friend, is to get yourself a good analogue
controller (eg:- wheel and pedals).

8?)

Presently using a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro. Set to Low return
to centre in Control Panel, and using fully non-linear in the demo.

I think you should be using the analogue joystick axis for the throttle!
Digital trigger too on and off.

If you try the above, try to be EXCEPTIONALLY SMOOTH in your movements!
Still seems alien to me after GP2, but eventually becomes (relatively)
natural after a zillion laps.

Also seems to help if you only shift down a gear (under-braking) at quite
low revs, but hold a higher gear through the corner than you would think.
This helps with rear end stability. This is especially important for the
bast of a section that is T7 & T8!

Still haven't sussed out how Mr Reynolds and Mr Mansell can get 1:06's
though, so I'm probably not qualified to give 'advice' at all... :-)

Have fun with a stunningly demanding demo (it makes me sweat anyway)...

   Get a wheel/pedal combo FAST! :))
