I am having a terrible time reading more than one or two messages before
the server freezes.  If I wait...EVENTUALLY the message body will dload..but
this is getting frustrating..
anyone else on the cable net having similar problems?

I have been having getting any messages at all

It will go a full 24 hours before updating messages and then when it does,
it only updates about 5-10% of what should be there

Hi Dave,

pretty much exactly as you describe.  More often than not the server is
unreachable and when it is, the lag to retrieve a message after checking the
header may be a minute or more.  It is more evident at the normal high usage
times and more noticeable with the binary groups (yes THOSE binary groups!)
I think the broadband providers, especially the large ones underestimate the
demand on the servers or intentionally limit bandwidth to access them.  I
tried a few of the free servers, but the service wasn't much better.  Time
to rag on the service provider to get reasonable service for the money you
spend.

About a week ago, there was a 24-hour lag in both messages appearing
and being posted but gradually it caught up and now it's pretty much
instantaneous.

But I'm having what's probably a local problem -- they seem to be
upgrading again (for which I am NOT complaining), and every night
about midnight, the service gets very shaky, going off completely for
up to an hour at a time or suffering intermittant failures.

But compared to my old dial-up, this is paradise...  :)

Haven't had the problem here.
Are all of the headers appearing, and retrieving the bodies is slow?
How are your download speeds?

One thing you can try that sounds silly but might help is putting in
the IP of the news server instead of using "news".
Drop to a DOS prompt and type PING NEWS. In return, you'll get your
news servers IP. I was having resolution problems with Forte Agent
until I removed the NEWS server and just put in the IP.

You might run some tracerts to your gateway and the news server, record the
results, and call customer service to see what's up.

I'm having that same problem here in Portland Oregon.
It started yesterday.

I know they are in Bankruptcy proceedings...I got a very odd letter from
AT&T yesterday about the possibility of switching their networks,  but the
newsgroups just seem doggy.  I'll clik on a new message and many times will
eventually get an error box saying 'your nntp server has not repsonded in 60
seconds...wait...cancel'    Just before reading your message that happened
again.  I'm thinking they have laid off any staff that kept things running
smoothly.

Good tip Tim. This was also the solution to getting my D-Link DI-704 gateway to
work with newsgroups and email. In my situation I couldn't use ping to get the
IP as I couldn't get through, but phoning your ISP will get you the info.

They still have the staff in place that is needed to run and maintain the
network. I'd call 'em up and see if they of any problems. It's sunday,
otherwise i'd check myself.

Yup...it's a good system.  =)  FWIW, all maintenance procedures are done
during a grave shift and they have a dedicated staff doing those
maintenances. The only time a maintenance would occure during the say would
be for emergency situations (usually when equipment has a known problem but
is still running and when more people are affected by it than are still
running). Keep that in mind if tech support ever tries passing that off on
you when you call during the say. Just an FYI, hehe...

I asked about the financial situation, but was told the problem

Usually, nothing happens.  It just sits there for a long time with
a blank screen.

If I start clicking on different un-read messages, I see a Netscape
error message:

                                ---

Netscape: Error

       A News (NNTP) error occured:
Too Many Connections [auth-readers allows 5  per host/0 per feed (0 ==  nolimit)] (Twister v1.2.0)

                                ---

   Who knows what's happening?

It is still going on here...the headers dload fine.  Then I can read 3 or
4 messages normally, then....Full Stop for approximentally 70 to 80 seconds.
The either I get the error box saying the nntp server did not respond or the
messages load...for 3 or 4 more then wait again...grrr.
I did a tracert and no real big hiccups...7 hops total.

I was having problems too and I use telocity (directv dsl).
At first the posts wouldn't go through, then some of the
messages wouldn't show up. I resorted to
www.dejanews.com. I am not sure if it is OK now or not.
I think my posts are getting out.
