DX 7.0 - install now?

by Bill Jone » Wed, 27 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Is DirectX 7.0 an essential download?

I have DX 6 now, and run N3, GPL, CPR, SCGT, VR, and Midtown Madness as far
as racing and driving sims.  My PC is a lowly P233MMX with 64MB and a 4MB
Voodoo1.

I installed DX7 and can't tell that it's either helped or hurt me.  It does
add a little to the game controller menus and make them a little easier to
manage.  I've definitely seen no sign of the DX7 horror stories you hear
about.

If you want to play it safe and you're satisfied with your machine as it is
you might want to wait until something you get requires it before
installing.  Your choice.  But you already knew that.

For the horror stories, go to microsoft.public.directx
Personally I haven't had any problems using DX7 as it simply refuses to
install on a Win95C (aka OEM Service Release 2.5). I know I'm not the
only one. Microsoft denies all knowledge (they refuse to comment).

I wouldn't be worried if I wasn't sure that a majority of the upcoming
titles will *require* DX7.

I had no problems but  good words of advice are, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX
IT".  Paul

I generally agree with that advice, but then I would ask you why you
installed it.

DX7 is also required for Flight Simulator 2K(what a surprise- a MS title
requiring it's newest software? ;-), but it's on the cd.
I have a V3 , Win98a and have had No problems with N3, GPL, Unreal, umm....
F1 Racing, Midtown Madness, SW: The Phantom Menace, and a few others I can't
think of right now. Just wait for a few more titles to be released, one of
them will have it bundled in for free instead of wasting the time to d/l it
now. I have seen no difference performance wise yet.

I had problems with my USB wheel after installing DX7.  I tried to uninstall
DX7 using a few different utilities but ended up reformatting HD and
reinstall Win98/DX6.1.  Not very fun.  Mfg said new drivers are not out for
3 to 6 months.  Be sure to backup ur stuff :)

soon anyway :)
