ATX PSU fan problems!

by MAD MA » Wed, 04 Jul 2001 18:44:53

People upgrade a lot here, to keep up with their thirst for power to feed
their Sim habit's <g>. So I am wondering if anyone has come up against this
problem with a previous/current PC.

The fan in my ATX PSU (Power supply unit) comes to a complete stop for no
apparent reason. It used to happen just once every couple of months but,
recently I have to place my hand at the rear vent area, to make certain the
darned thing is running properly! This of course is VERY risky to my system
in general. I have had it get so hot a few times (didn't know it was
happening!), that the case/cpu temps have become that hot, the PC resets
itself! As I say, I now have to check it when I switch on, and keep checking
it every now and then, to make certain the thing is running. Trust me, these
PSU un-cooled, get extremely HOT! In fact, you can't keep your hand on the
vent for long when a that fan stops! Ok, that's the info. Here's some
questions.

Has this happened to anyone else here before? If so, is there ANY way to fix
the problem, other than buying a brand NEW ATX PSU? What do you think the
problem could be? Electrical or, a problem with the fan assembly/bearings
(mechanical)? Has anyone ever "delved" inside a ATX PSU and, if so, how does
the fan assembly system work? I just need to now if I *might* be able to
repair it, rather than spend money on a case that is a year and a half old,
and long out of guarantee. If you think it is "electrical", I am usually
pretty good with stuff, but I don't know if I could solve it. I think I
might have more chance if it is a "mechanical" fan problem. In my experience
of the problem, I am almost 100% certain it is mechanical. For all I know
though, these PSU alloy cases are sealed? I can't say I have ever looked
closely enough at one, so I don't know.

Please help if you can answer *any* of the questions, as I would like to
have a try at a repair, if an "expert" says it can be done <g>. Thank you.

Hi
I think you can take the power suply out of your case, open it and try to
clean the fan.
Dust can make it stop, also take alook at the cable and conection of the
fan.

The components inside the PSU store electricity a long time even when not
plugged in, so opening a PSU without any experience is hazardous.

Yep, it even tells you that on the PS.

I'd just buy a new PSU.

Andi.
