I did just re-configure my Thrustmaster Nascar Pro to use the buttons
on the wheel for clutch and arm, as opposed to look left, look right (how
I had it before).  Is it possible that because I had the clutch in (the
button pushed) that the channel to the gear shift got screwed up on my
wheel, or could this have been a random mechanical failure in GPL?

For the first part of the time on the grid for multi-player races, the
gearbox is disabled.  Just keep trying to get it into first gear.
Eventually the gearbox will be enabled (sometime just before the flag
man appears).
