Has anyone tried this yet, or know anything about it?

Here's where you find everything the publisher has
to say about it:

http://www.dakar-rally-game.com/english/index.html

And here's a High Gear article:

http://www.sportplanet.com/hg/article.php?page=1&id=31

As far as I know, only the PS2 version will be
shipping to the United States.  The PC version
will only ship in Europe and, later, other non-US
markets.  This follows the pattern set by
Broadsword's previous title, Spirit of Speed 1937.

>Has anyone tried this yet, or know anything about it?

Yes, avoid it, major crap:

- poor graphics
- poor car control
- no force feedback
- clumsy menu, mainly because it's a cheap conversion of the PS2 game,
for example you can't use your keyboard when you enter your name

Good have been a good arcade racer, unfortunately it isn't.

Well.. I'm not really too much into pure arcade racers so I didn't
really look forward to this one, since it was made by Acclaim, who
only produce arcade games.
But the preview on the High Gear site did sound good - repairing your
vehicle, finding the fastest route, 25km stages..

Well - repairing is done by pressing a fire button and your car is
repaired immediately, the 25km stages are split up into 4 x 6km
stages, and each stage has one or two simple branches which is the
'finding the fastest route' part.

Anyway, the control of the car is so bad, and you can't adjust
anything like deadzone or something like that in the game, it's really
not worth it. Shame indeed.

And what an annoying type I made here, this should have been
'Could have been' ofcourse :)

Can't adjust the deadzone, eh?  Sounds like a job
for CTFJ3.2, the configuration utility that makes
all the difference in Spirit of Speed.  :)

hmmm, I'll have to look for that deadzone util, that's my only grief
with dakar.

I'd have to say, I think it's better than any other "arcadey" driving
game I've played: when you go over those steep rises and catch airt it
looks pretty neat, and the scenery is pretty cool.. only things I
don't like is you can't customize the response of the wheel, and I
can't find any advanced graphics options. but it runs ok on my system:
PII 400, geforce mx 32meg card.

the only other driving games I like are GPL and GP3 :)

I think it's great for a "lighter" game.

you can drive the buggy, a dirt bike, an ATV, or a truck. and it's
funny when you crash & the hood keeps coming up, or the wheels wobble
& affect steering. graphics are great. it's not really a sim though.

I thought porsche unleashed was much worse.

You'll find the StickWorks homepage here:

http://home.att.net/~stickworks/

And the utility here:

http://home.att.net/~stickworks/ctfjv320.zip

And you can find an article on using it here:

http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/depart/mar01/stick.html

Who knows?  Maybe the settings for Spirit of Speed
will work for Paris-Dakar?

Okokok, listen, I respect other opinions, and I think it's really
great you enjoy Paris-Dakar, but that last statement doesn't make any
sense!! NFS:PU even came close to being a sim, only let down by the
overdone reactions of the cars. Anyway, it actually feels like you're
driving a car in Porsche. Which cannot be said about Paris-Dakar.
Sorry if I seem a little agressive now :), but stating that
Paris-Dakar is better than NFS:PU made me fall off my chair :))

I agree-----NFSPU is one of my all time faves. Great fun. How you could not
like it is beyond me.

Actually, it sounds like another painful lesson that Broadsword failed
to learn after their experiences with SoS . . .
