When I've suffered damage in a Championship Season race and cannot continue,
how can I allow the race to finish (without me).  If I can't get back to the pits,
it seems that the only thing to do is hit escape and lose the race?

Press the 'A' key while racing, this will put you into accelerated mode.
It's in the manual.  What it does is give you a DNF, and the rest of the
field will finish without you.

Just push  A  while on the track and the rest of the cars will
continue to run while you will recieve a DNF.

Hit Shift-A or A and you will go to accelerated time mode.   You will
be credited with the place where you stopped.
