I had the exact same problem!! The problem lies with your 3D card so here's
what you do :

Save the game after stage 4 (I'm sure you've already done this)
In the options screen, change over from your 3D card to just the basic
software-rendered version (Device 0, I believe) and play the stage. It'll
look pretty awful, and you can barely see anything, but at the end of either
that stage or the next (can't remember which) save the game again and go
back to the options screen and change back to your 3D card.

All will be well again!

I had a similar problem with Australia, but in my case it would crash at
the same place within the stage itself, and eventually I got lucky and
got through the stage without it crashing.

I'm using a Creative Voodoo Blaster Banshee with the Creative drivers
(not sure what version they are).

It probably also depends on whether you're using DirectX 5 or 6.

I'm still leading the championship halfway through the last rally (Great
Britain), but at that point I bought Grand Prix Legends and still
haven't gone back to CMR!

Have you tried the patch?  Go here http://www.3dracing.com/users/cmr/ and go to the downloads section.

Personally, the game is worth the $60 CDN.  I've also purchased TOCA and TOCA 2, both imports and both $60 CDN.

Anyone know if there's a patch which allows you to use split-axis?
