helmet, and god-knows-how-many decibels coming out of the engine a
matter of inches away from you, you have next to no directional
awareness of sound, and the only time you are aware of the other cars'
sound is when they are all together in concert on the grid; you will
not be able to hear individual cars.
I am not making this up - I read (somewhere authoritative, I'm sure:-)*
that this was the case for F1 cars, and I can report from personal
experience the reduction in directional sense from driving a Formula
Vauxhall single seater with balaclava and full-face helmet. You _can_
hear and feel the kerbs, of course, and I am enormously impressed at
how accurate the sensation of going over the kerbs is in the game.
