Just thought people might want an update on this as no one else seems to
have mentioned it.

Spirit of Speed looked much more polished than at E3, and the developer
said it would probably be released in October/November.

Good points:

- Shiny environmnent mapped aluminium cars
- Good engine noise
- Only chance to drive old tracks such as Brooklands
- Nice feel for the car when driving
- Physics seemed good, though not up to GPL standards

Bad points:

- they really mean the "spirit" of 30's racing rather than trying to
reproduce the exact period as in GPL. This means the cars other than the
Mercedes and Auto-Union are vastly improved so that they can keep up,
otherwise there would be no point in picking them. The cars also race
where they never would have, such as the silver arrows at Brooklands.
Finally the tracks are not accurate. Tripoli, for example has been
shortened and modified - I don't think you ever drove through rock
tunnels in the original for example.

- seemed a bit easy to drive

- car seemed to "stick" to the polygons forming the track, causing an
abrupt attitude change as the camber of the road surface changed. This
was difficult to work out what was happening and could be a physics
problem.

Overall I'd say it was worth buying though as you won't get the same
experience with any other driving game.

(I still wish someone would do a 1930's total-conversion though for GPL!)

This exactly what I was waiting for...

Some smart guy must be able to repair that.

I don't think so. But which tracks are included?

I already heard about Tripoli, Brooklands and Monza, but what about
- Avus
- Nurburgring
- Donnington
- RooseVelt Raceway
- Bremgarten
- Spa-Franchorchamps

difficulty may be adjustable...

Let's hope that it is solved in the final release.

We should at least give it a chance...

I would prefer a 1950s conversion because the 1930s era will be covered
by SoS one way or another.

Greetings,

Well, as a great fan of historical racing simulations (namely GPL!), this
means that I will have nothing else to add to the collection.  If there was
one thing that has killed the interest, it's this snippet.

Included, but not seen

Not included:-(

Included, but not seen

Included, but this was a much derided layout at the time.

Maybe someone could do a GPL->SoS converter? The mysterious Dave Noonan
for example.

I agree it's a shame, but maybe the format will be easier for the
community to edit than GPL and someone will restore the tracks to their
former glory:-)

Now I'd like to see THAT!
