Gravis X-Terminator for Racing Games .. good or not?

by Fuji Sarton » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi there,

I'm interested in getting a wheel but prefer buying game pad so that I
can use it for other types of games also.

My question is: what is the best game pad for racing?? I'm interested in
getting the Gravis X-terminator because it has an analog button that I
could use for steering.

I'm now using my MS Sidewinder Gamepad to race in GPL but the analog
controls has always left me in the dust, or upside down on the side of
the track  ;-)

I'll wait for your suggestions.

Thanks.

Almost every control in GPL needs to be analog not digital (on/off).
Therefore your best choice is to get a wheel for racing and use a
gamepad for other things.  If you are really serious about GPL, you will
either need a wheel and pedals (perferably pedals on separate axes), or
you could use a set of pedals (CH makes a set that can switch between
rudders and pedals) and a gamepad with some sort of analog controlling
axis (or joystick).  But if you are dead set on only having a gamepad,
make sure that it has at least 2 axes that are analog control.  This way
you can map steering to 1 and brake/pedal to the other.

I've been using the Xterminator for a couple of months.  I recommend it.  It
works great with Viper racing, All NFS's, MS Flight Sim '98.  F1RS only
recognized the analog joystick and the "flipper" buttons.
