I wouldn't recommend WD40. Best to get some tuner cleaner from a radio parts
place like Radio Shack (shadio rack? - I used to manage one). Also, you can
use brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner from an auto parts store,
but make sure they are safe for plastic if you are spaying near any plastic
parts, otherwise you'll melt them.

Question about cleaning Hyperstim potentiometers

by Remco Moe » Sat, 01 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hey all!

Lately my (superb) Hyperstimulator is spiking. :-( The throttle gives
100% when at 30% for a moment, causing funny moments when stepping on
the gas after a turn. <g> The spiking in the wheel doesn't help
either, at 10% right turn, it gives 90-100% for a moment.

Now, with all the tricky GPL turns being to the right, I can say GPL
is more fun then ever! NOT!

Is there an Hyperstim wizard who can tell me how I can clean the pots?
They are the default blue 100K ones, but I believe they have a  closed
housing. Can I use some spray like WD40 to clean them, and if so, do I
have to open those potentiometers? If the latter is true, how do I
open these ***s without causing damage?

Thanks to the kind person who can help me.

Regards,

Remco

Hi Remco,

Your pots are covered buy a 3 month warranty. If you are outside the
warranty period the cost of replacement pots from your distributor is very
small. In my experience, cleaning the pots is a waste of time. They might
come good for a short time but will stuff up again, usually in the middle of
an online final. Contact your distributor and he will send out replacement
pots.

You might also be interested in the 'Pro Upgrade Pots Kit' as run by Vail
Riches and others. This is a 'Works Driver" modification. The standard pots
are replaced by high end opto encoders giving 1000 positions per turn, as
against 200 for the standard pots and a PCB that converts the signal from
digital back to analoge. This modification also requires a small
modification by you to the Hyper Module. Instructions on how to do this mod
come in the kit. This is a lifetime upgrade, but is very expensive (aprox
$180 Aust for the steering and $280 Aust for the pedals). This modification
is way to expensive for most people and therefore is not offered in our
standard product line. If you are interested in this upgrade you should

Good point, the pots will always 'stuff up'. And they also wear out and
become useless in time.  If you've run them dirty for a while, cleaning them
does no good because damage has already been done to the wiped surface.
However, cleaning them on a regular basis, before they start spiking, will
make them last a whole lot longer.

Perhaps if the pots were easier to get at, people would clean them on a
regular basis and replacing pots wouldn't be such an issue  (hint, hint)
;-)
