Computer Good Enough?

My brother just got a computer from Dell and I was wondering what he could
run on it without total frustration.  What would you suggest for an
upgrade?

Pentium III 700 MHz, 128 MB, 32MB NVIDIA TNT2 M64 AGP card, 48x CD ROM,
Turtle Beach Montego II A3D 320V Sound.

Especially interested in:

Grand Prix Legends
Nascar Legends
Dirt Track Racing

We'd appreciate any advice from you collected wisdom.
Thanks guys.

Your machine will run those titles just fine as-is.  If you *have* money
burning a hole in your pocket for an upgrade, you could probably go with
either a GeFarce2 or a Voodoo 5.  But it's not really necessary.  Just
make sure you get the 1.2 patch and the d3d patch for GPL.  BTW, what
kind of wheel you have?

That's almost identical to a Dell system a friend got a while back.
Gran Prix Legends was pretty adequate after installing the OpenGL beta
patch, but it should really rock with the new D3D beta patch they've
released.  I intend to install it for him and find out, but he's only
got DirectX 6.1 installed and the patch requires 7+ to work properly.
It's a 3+ meg install download from MS for the 7.0a release of DirectX
and I've not had the time to spend d/l'ing it on his machine.

I expect he should be pretty happy with all those choices.  I just
checked and NL does come with a Direct3D rasterizer.

I would say try those games before upgrading anything.  That's already a
fast computer.

I have a Dell B733r + geForce etc. GPL is a dream with the new d3d
rasterizer fix and the other 2 games you mention are absolutely fine as
well. F1 2000 is also good, but takes more horsepower than any other game
i've got. GP3 runs great as does Motocross Madness 2.

He does not have a wheel as yet.  He might make the jump if he gets into it.
I might go in on one to make it easier for him.
Any good wheels that do not cost tons of money we might look at?

Thanks for all the encouragement from everyone.

Absolutely!  As of a couple days ago, http://www.computergeeks.com was
still selling reconditioned LWFF wheels for something like $58.  Check
it out.

Guillemot Ferrari FF is a very good choise, high quality and low in latency
(subjective) another popular choise is the Logitech FF wheel.
