Indycar 2 Problem :(

by Al Fo » Tue, 03 Dec 2002 04:51:25

Hi there,

Just dug up this game after years of not playing it (IE was married!)
I've installed all the relevent patches, but what happens to my game
is that when I leave the pits the screen freezes  - although the sound
continues??? Can anybody suggest anything to help please?

My system is

Duron 1ghz
256 Ram
GeForce2 32mb

It used to work in my old K6/2 - 500mhz with same graphics card.

cheers

Greg

Get married again...?  :-)

Does it lock as soon as you start moving, or just after you leave pit road?

Sure you remembered to set up the pedals as single axis for this one
.Although the lockup while sound continues seems like a graphics
card/monitor  issue, my copy of Windy has never been uninstalled and still
runs as well as it ever did ( hehe ,  ok ).W98 latest dx
Brilliant on 2 player lan ,esp at nazareth and michigan. You
may snipe oh GPL grasshopper but this was the daddy !

I've now tried using keys, but the same happens.  I move for about
2secs then the problem occurs.  Tried different graphics drivers
etc....... The DOS version runs fine, but with no-sound.

there is the tip-off.  You have to configure your dos soundblaster
emulator to use either irq 5 or 7.  Back in the good ol days, they only
coded for a small amount of changes, saved programming and debugging and
since 9/10ths of all soundcards installed to irq 5 or 7 that wasn't a
problem.  Windows, however with plug and play, will mix and match irq's with
little regard to conflicts.   Try messing with device manager to see if you
can re-assign the SB emulator to irq 5.
good luck

I thought it was a DOS game running in a Windows shell?... in which case (
and I tell you it seems like only yesterday) I seem to remember you had to
figure out the SB dos emulators in and out stuff  in Device manager and then
use the dos sound configuration tool  which came with the game to choose the
right ones , only then would you hear the throaty rumble of a good old V8!
(But then it's been installed so long I don't remember doing it! Except for
the throaty rumble of the V8 that is .)
Wow ! As you say plug and play  :-) jv

This suggestion is not as flippant as it sounds. GPL will run  nicely on
that config, provided you don't go wild on add-ons (4-bit/"medium" versions
of tracks and JF carset should work though).

Not saying ICR2 is not an amazing piece of code, because it is, but things
have moved on and, if anything, GPL will stop you from repeating the
marriage mistake.

I've got GPL - that game is so cool, but just want a pick up and play
a game sometimes.
