SB port okay for wheel or need gamecard?

SB port okay for wheel or need gamecard?

by Davi » Sun, 19 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I am thinking about getting a wheel/pedal setup and I would like to
know if performance is sufficient through the SB port or will I need a
gamecard to make it worthwhile.
Also, I suppose if I were really experienced I'd know how to switch
between devices that share the same IRQ under win95 so I could have a
card if necessary.  Maybe someone could explain how this would work?:)

Thanks  --David

I have a SB Pro soundcard and my Thrustmaster T2 works great on the game
port.  I have had no need (read: drift) causing me to get a dedicated
game card.

You should have no problem using your SB port.  It may not be as precise
as a speed adjustable dedicated game card.  You will have to make that
decision yourself.  If you do opt for a game card I highly suggest
Thrustmaster's ACM card.

To the best of my knowledge none of the game controller cards use IRQ's,
it is a straight forward polling of the I/O address.

The best thing to do is get the wheel and try it (I mean, if you're going
to get anyway...). I have a P-133 with an SB 16 card and I use my T2 wheel
through that... I have had no problems, despite what I was told I could
expect...

Anyway, if you do have problems, you can always get a dedicated card. I'm
just saying I wouldn't get it without trying your existing port...
