N2002: Strange error message

by Martin Granbe » Sat, 16 Nov 2002 05:45:40

Hi,

I've searched a lot for a solution for this problem, but can't find
any so I put my faith in r.a.s :)

My problem is that N2002 will not run properly anymore, or rather not
at all.

When I start N2002 and after the main screen is shown I get:
"Installation appears to be incorrect, please try to reinstall..."

It worked perfectly until I installed some more memory (now 512mb) and
a larger harddrive. I copied my old "c:" to my new "c:", made that
bootable and everything works perfectly but N2002. (N2002 was/is on my
c: drive)

I tried removing the CD from the drive and start again and then it
complains about the missing CD instead. So this error message is shown
after the CD-check is done.

I can run N2002 in dedicated server mode so no vital files appears to
be corrupt.

I have not installed any third-party patches, atleast not since it
last ran great before the upgrade.

And no, I have not done what it says - try to reinstall. Because it
should not be needed to reinstall and reapply all patches. I am
stubborn when it comes to these things... :)

Any ideas how to cure it?

Only thing I can think of is that N2002 somehow remembers the label of
my previous C-drive and use that in its anti-piracy check. That is the
only thing that has changed that should even remotely affect this.

Cheers,

/Martin

One cause for that error could be a missing or invalid CD key in the
registry.  Use regedit and look at
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sierra\CDKeys" for a NR2002 binary value.  I'm
not sure what could cause it to go missing, but if it is you'll need to
reinstall to correct the problem.

When you did the copy, did you do an image copy or just a straight copy of the old drive?

Thanks for the suggestion. But the binary value is still there. After
my post yesterday I tried a nocd-patch but this gave me the same
error.

It was a straight copy, and after that taking care of making it
bootable and all the other things Windows (ME) requires.

Replying to myleft here as I found the problem out myself.

What I forgot also had changed is the Volume Serial Number of the
harddrive. This number is the "randomly" assigned number a diskette or
hardrive gets after format, such as 1234-abcd.

I found a log containing the old number and set this as the serial on
my my drive, and voila - it works again! :)

I knew there was no need for a reinstall... :)

I bet this serial number is used together with the CD key to create
the binary CD key number N2002 stores in the registry.

Cheers,

/Martin
PS. To set the volume serial number - get Sysinternal's VolumeID
program.
