Hmm.. even when using these techniques, my absolute Monza limit is 1.29.9x!
Just where is it on the track that schmucks like me lose the time to the
really fast guys?

Use GPLDump to compare your laps vs the record laps.

I'm stuck at 1:31.8x.  I used GPLdump to compare a couple of replays, and I'm
losing EVERYWHERE>  Problem is, it doesn't really help me FIND the speed.  It
only shows where I *lost* it.  ...does that make sense?

Well, if you know where you're losing speed, that ought to help you find it.
Here's what I think is the thing--

It's hard to unlearn doing something a way once you get used to doing it
that way.  If you know you're losing speed somewhere, then try doing
something different, even drastically different than whatever it is you've
been doing.

At Spa, I took Stavelot for ages by dropping three gears before coming to
the bridge.  I was convinced you couldn't get around it any other way.
After taking a look at some replays I was quickly able to see how wrong I
was in what I was doing, but still had a hard time for a while getting
myself to do it.

Other things you can try changing are curve entries and exits and braking
zones.  Just try something different, whatever it may be.

Prophetic words.. right after I made my last post, I finally figured out a
better way to enter the first Lesmo and dropped down to 1.29.03!

Well, if I'm slower everywhere, and I'm already on the limit, how in the WORLD
do I go faster??

Like at Kyalami, I'm in second gear for MOST of the lap, and have to drop to
first in the turn before the esses...  I realize I should be able to go faster,
but it's all I can do to stay on the track NOW.

I think I may need another wheel.  It's possible that my T2 just doesn't give
me the 'precision' I need to turn fast lap times.  I don't have any confidence
letting the car drift to the edge of the track.  Unfortunately, I don't have
the finances for that(TSW,ECCI)  right now. :-(

I don't understand - how many different ways can there BE to enter a one-line
corner?  It's not like the first turn at the Cleveland Airport track...

Eldred, the best way to learn this is to watch a lot of replays of
different people. You'll see that there are very different driving
styles, and many ways to take the same corner...

Good advice about spending some time downloading replays and watching them.

Like I said, once you "learn" something it's very difficult to either see
another way and "unlearn" it.

Well, there's really no such thing as a one line corner.  There may be only
one *correct* line for your driving style, though.  The problem is finding
that line.  And that *one* line has a habit of changing over the course of a
race as tire wear and temperatures and fuel loads change.

GPL models this type of thing quite well.  It's what has endeared the sim to
this group and makes it quite exasperating at the same time.  In lots of
other sims, once you learn the "right line" that's all there is to it.
Conditions don't change enough to warrant having to change your driving
style much during the course of a race.

That's what so maddening to see sometimes, and what I'm talking about when I
say try something different if you know you're losing speed, even if it
seems to be the wrong thing to do.  You may very well be surprised at the
outcome.

try GPL-SpyGirl to merge your own lap with a hotlap from someone else
and watch it as a replay in GPL itself to find the differences.

SpyGirl?  I haven't tried that yet.  Do you actually see BOTH cars on the
screen at the same time?  I'll have to find it...

Eldred, with Spygirl you can merge 2 replays into one, perfect for
comparing your lap vs a record lap.
Together with GPLDump (with which you can compare 2 replays in a
graphical way) you should be able to find out where, when and how you
lose your time. You'll learn lots from these two great utilities.

You can find both utils at The Fast Lane, don't have the URL here but
you probably know it.

Get a Logitech FF wheel. You can order one from ProVantage for $103 plus
shipping($125 total). Use your T2 pedals and you WILL be going faster after
some tweaking and practice. It will be WELL worth the money. Now the
question is, how long will this wheel last? I have a TSW also and I am
REALLY
questioning the reliability of the LWFF.
