Is it worth getting steering wheel?

One of my favourite games on the PC is Grand Prix 2 from
Microprose. I use the keyboard to control the car , is it worth
spending 70+ pounds on a set of pedals + steering wheel?

Does it add to the gameplay?

What are the best pedals/steering wheel?

I've seen advertised the Digital Edge F1 SIM (very expensive at
160 pounds!), Digital Edge F1 SIM compact (about 70 pounds), Mad
Catz (cheapest I found at 60 pounds) and the new CH Racing System
(about 90 pounds).

Thanks to all who reply.

Dave.

Hi Dave..

A couple of years ago I started sim racing with Nascar 1 on a joystick.
This went on for a couple of months. Yes, I had a ball.  Then, I
received a Thrustmaster T2 wheel and pedals as a Christmas gift. Wow...
did it ever add to the sim racing experience. Spurred on by the added
diminsion a wheel affords, I've bought every "serious" sim I've heard
about (ICR2, N2, GP2, etc.)  Until you've driven using a wheel and
pedals, you simply can't imagine the difference.  As for suggestions,
are Thrustmaster products available in your part of the world?  If so,
they make a couple of wheels that are relatively inexpensive (in the US
that is).  I think both are below $99 US. They are the T1 and T2.  The
T1 has buttons and the like on the wheel for shifting,
acceleration, etc.  (Like F1?) And the T2 has a gearshift and floor
pedals. Hope this helps.

I think when you buy the F1 sim compact (with plastic pedals) it would
be the best choice. If you want really a good quality go for the F1 sim
with metal pedals, it's great! And yes it's devenatly worth getting a
pedal/wheelset, the choice is to you in chosing the right one. As said
bevore I would buy the F1sim.

Well,

I have GP1 and T2 and I preffer T2. It gives much more realism but come
ppl have problems driving with peddals and they choose GP1. It's up to
you ofcourse. Good and cheap wheel is GP1, buy it. If you can afford the
new F1 from Thrustmaster or T2, buy that one :)

I just picked up Thrustmaster's NASCAR PRO Racing Wheel last night, and
it rocks!  They have other models as well.  $129 US.  Check out
http://www.thrustmaster.com for more info.

Defintely adds to game play...

Is the Pope Catholic? <g>

You pretty much get what you pay for. If money is no object then ECCI
probably make the best ones. TSW is also very good. Both of these are
from the States though so import duties and shipping add rather too much
to the cost :(

Of the ones readily available in Europe, the GP500/F1 Sim is probably the
best. I don't know about the "Compact" F1 Sim model though - the idea of
plastic pedals doesn't sound that encouraging :(

If value for money is a prime concern then you probably won't do better
than the Thrustmaster GP1 (or the T2 if you want pedals).

Can't comment about the CH ones but my advice is to avoid the Mad Catz -
not up to serious racing from what I've seen & heard.

Cheers,
Richard
