Gran Turismo is forcing me to buy a Playstation!

If you point your browser to one of the Playstation sites, you will notice that
Sony is just starting to release a version of the PSX with a Dual Shock
controller packaged in it.  This may be right up your alley..

I have been using the Dual Shock controller for about a week now and have to
say that it really does add to the game.  It may take a bit of getting used to
because the controls are a bit on the sensitive side, but it is well worth it
in the end (about 1sec worth on my times to date).

As far as a PSX2 coming out in the near future.  Sony had already pushed it
back a few months and I still havent heard anything definate about the
backward-compatability issue.

GT is a very good PSX game, and kept me glued to my PSX for at least a week (on
holiday at the time), but it gets boring quite quickly after that. It's not a
sim, just a game, so if you're into GP2 it doesn't offer much.

In the UK playstations are pretty cheap (though much cheaper in US). I wouldn't
say get a PSX for GT, but I wouldn't say get one either. If you can find say 3
other games that you'll want to play then get one (FF7 is a must!).

PSX replacement is years away.

GT supports it.

Get a life :) (in a nice way)

I hear you,
I've been in the same dilemma ever since I checked out NFS III on the
PS at a friends house. The replay's are like being in your own chase
scene movie.
I've seen Gran Turismo replays and stuff and it does look to be very
fun. It's a console arcade game, maybe the best racing console game
ever.....but : no in-car mode (!), and as you know, no flips or damage
to cars (!!)... so if you just want to drive hella fast and have fun
watching it over and over, this game will rock.
On the other hand, I've been saving up for Grand Prix Legends!! The
demo of this game has me so hypnotized,, I'm willing to bet  that this
driving model will blow away all previous sims. I absolutely love the
'feel' of these cars. whew. I expect to be spending way too much time
on these tracks.
So, GPL is a racing sim and GT is an arcade game. No big deal, but I
feel guilty for investing in a whole 'nother system just for fun. But
what the heck~! (not that money is that easy to come by)
The only thing is that GT is billed as the greatest racing sim ever,,,
and well, you know.
See you at the track!

Another reason to get a playstation is because they are coming out with TOCA
for playstaion.

Gran Turismo is forcing me to buy a Playstation!

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit I did.  "Hi, I'm Dave.  I bought a Playstation
to play one game".  Chorus: "Hi Dave".

What the heck, it cost a fair bit less than I paid to spend a weekend in Mtl
for the F1 race there.

Is it worth it?  I'd say for the majority not.  But who says we are normal,
much less a majority?  :-)

I picked up the Interact Ultra Racer for $30.  A handheld controller with
about an ~2" dia analog wheel, an analog trigger for throttle, an analog
button for brake, another analog button (for?), and the usual host of discrete
buttons.  Works pretty well.  But then again, I prefer PC sims with a stick
over a wheel.

I guess what sold me was the grin factor of watching replays of me ***
around courses at 100+ mph with suspension at full travel in cars that I've
driven before (or hope to drive).

My advice is to try a Namco Negcon. This is the controller which
rotates around a split in the middle. It's quite different from
anything else out there and takes a bit of getting used to - but I
think it's wonderful. I much prefer a Negcon for steering to a cheap
PC/PSX steering wheel. (I haven't tried an expensive one with force
feedback yet so can't comment in comparison to those.)

The Negcon is only slightly let down by the two analogue buttons it
uses accelerator and brake. They're good but you need fine thumb
control to be able to use them properly.

I did try a dualshock and the steering was nice but a little fiddly -
and I couldn't work out how to use it for either brakes or
accelerator. If you don't have analogue brakes and accelerator, you
can't really drive the car properly.

EA claims it is not an "offical" Sony PSX product, and as such it
doesn't work with some of their games (like the recently released Road
Rash 3D).

Actually there's been quite a mix of goodand bad reviews for RR3D. The
only problem seems to be graphical, some difficulties with the
polygons at distances (eg., making it hard to see what lane upconming
traffic is in).

But the PC version will support Voodoo2 all the way up to 1024x768, so
I'm hopeful it won't have the same problem. I'm also happy to see
they've maintained the basic Road Rash concept, which is miles and
miles of long tracks to race and fight on.

It works with all racing games developed by reputable manufacturers.
(Particular games of interest to this group that I know it works
with - Gran Turismo, NFS3, V-Rally, Wipeout, Porsche Challenge.)

Of course, I'm not sure if I would count EA as a good manufacturer -
and judging by the poor reviews of Road Rash 3D, I think the lack of
Negcon support is the least of its worries.

This is an age old argument in the ***, err siming, newsgroups.  It has
been tackled for as long as I remember reading csipg and its progeny.  There
is no solution to it.  I just wonder why so many deem it necessary to fit
everything into a black/white dichotomy of game/sim as if there isn't an
infinte set of shades between.  FWIW, I'd say GPL is at one end of the
spectrum, GT fits toward the middle in the racing mode, and more firmly in the
sim camp for the driving model and setups.
