That's right - the best way to think of it is that if you're both
driving identically, it's the *time* gap between you that stays
constant, rather than the distance gap.
This means that as you slow down the distance between you decreases (but
the time gap remains the same), and when you speed up the distance
increases (but again, the time gap is unchanged).
Another thing to bear in mind is that sometimes if you brake too late it
penalises your exit from the turn, so that overall you lose out.
I often find when comparing my hotlaps with WW's, the only places where
I ever gain time is under braking, but invariably I lose more time on
the following straight!
In general I believe a fast exit is more important than late braking
(within reason!).
