GPL: Making a backup

by Colin Harri » Mon, 11 Jun 2001 11:25:56

My copy of GPL, after 3 years, has seen better days. It barely plays
anymore, covered in scratches. I wrote to Sierra, asking about a
replacement, but they charge $10 plus postage (both ways) to replace. Can
someone tell me how to make a backup copy onto a new CD, please?
Might be better to email me privately, I don't want to promote illegal
copying, but this isn't, is it?

Just copy your entire GPL folder onto CD as a data backup.  You can then
reinstall it by copying the folder back again and creating a shortcut to the
program.  You will also need to get hold of the No-CD patch for GPL so that
you don't have to keep on inserting the CD every time.  Finally, a backup
copy of GPL can be bought from HMV, Game or EB from the new Sierra "Best
Sellers" range for 9.99.

If you are going to make a CD backup of the GPL folder, a good tip is to zip
it first then put the zip onto CD. This prevents all the files becoming read
only when you copy them back to HD.

Also install Papyrus' latest 1.2.0.2. fix and as a bonus to curing the P4
1.7 problem Papyrus have also removed the CD checking software.

Have you heard of the SkipDoctor?  Read a mag. review that said that it
was brilliant for fixing scratched CDs and making them work like new
again.  It's available here in the UK at various well-known outlets.

Check out http://www.pinpointdigital.co.uk and click on the SkipDoctor
button.
