Have I made the right choice for GPL?

I used to play GPL (the demo) with an AMD K6 200, 48Mb ram, Voodoo 1 and
a gravis analogue joystick; Yes, this was pretty slow.

Ia€?m  now  playing  the  full version with a Celeron 433, 64Mb ram, Voodoo 3 2000, Soundbalster PCI64 and a Microsoft FF wheel.  I may  drive  slower  than Tora Takagi with three wheels and two broken legs, but  Ia€?m happy nethertheless.  Months of practice and an unhappy girlfriend here I come.

Have I made a good choice, though?  Perhaps more RAM or an SBLive! is required?

SBLive made a big difference for me, but the old sound card was an
on-board cheapo thing so it may have been worse than your existing one.

SBLive made a big difference to me also - full sounds instead of the
minimum, and my previous card was a SB16

Oh yes, and I forgot to mention that with my old onboard sound system
the replacement engine sounds were just awful, whereas with the SBLive
they are superb!

I guess that's why the inbuilt sounds were fairly mediocre - they must
have been designed with low-end sound cards in mind.

ooh, interesting, i tried the replacement sounds with my SB16 and
couldn't work out what all the fuss was about, i binned them straight
away. I'll try them again now i have my Live installed.

I don't think either would make much difference.  I'm running almost the same
setup without FF.  When I went from a Soundblaster Pro (ISA) to my PCI64, the
difference was quite large.  Live would sound a little better, but I doubt it
would improve frame rate or control smoothness.  You've got a pretty good
system there, any remaining problems are your fault :-)
