Interesting, but fairly small. Scalextric had some similar ideas in the
early 80ies but their electronic gas/pit stop unit didn't sell very well
as far as I know.

P.S: How is your own 4-lane Artin track coming along?

win.server.ntlworld.com>:

That's cute. I used to be a total slot car junky, spending all my time and
money*** out at commercial 1/24th scale slot car tracks. This was nearly
35yrs ago, there were national slot car champions, magazines, it was huge. I
still have the gear that I've been saving waiting for 1/24th scale to come
back, but I don't know of any tracks, at least not in the Vancouver B.C. area.

I haven't set it(them) up yet.  No room right now.  When I buy my house, I'll
setup a corner of the ba***t for a slot car table.  And another corner for my
music studio...<g>

I remember it back then, too.  I have two tracks within 20 minutes of
me here in Houston, but for some reason they don't appeal to me at
present.  Check out this club in your area.  The images should make
you a big nostalgic...

        http://www.racesimcentral.net/

There's also this place where they race:

        http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Two great web links for slot racing are:

        http://www.racesimcentral.net/;
        (my friend John Ford's magazine)

        http://www.racesimcentral.net/
(probably the most comprehensive slots web 'zine)

Here's a first-rate mail order site with a walk in store a few hours
south of you in Tacoma, WA.

        http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Hope this helps.

BTW - check out eBay for slot racing stuff.  That old stuff of yours
could be worth some serious $$$$ today.

In the 1st Slot boom (1960's) I was a kid with no money ( i was only 13 in
1966)

Here in Texas in 1985, slot cars made a comeback with the standardized 155 '
Blue King track and I was hooked !!!!!!!! I raced everything that I could
including Group 15, Group 7 and 1/32 group 32(?)

Those 2.9 second laps with a Kolford )name?) powered Group car was wild with
glue lines, computerized races (8 lane  times 3 to 5 minute heats) which was
24 to 40 minutes  of wild racing plus the 3 or four minute "pit time"
between lane changes/

The local track finally died and I competed in RC cars for a few years
See http://www.timdeatheragecpa.com/timdeatherageracingchapter3.htm
for the rest of the story

Thanks Eldred for reminding me of fun times

Hey, no problem...<g>  2.9 second laps on a 155' track?  That sounds too fast
to even SEE.  What did you do, just FLOOR it?<g>
JCPenny had a sale for Artin 1/32 track 2 months ago.  I bought *4* sets...
Ooh, so much for budget... :)

I was also a big fan of slotcars in my youth (mid-1960's).  There were three large
1/24th scale tracks within a couple of miles of where I lived in Torrance/Redondo
Beach, California. I remember racing even before I had saved up for a controller -
just touching the wires to the terminals (kind of like trying to play GPL with the
keyboard).  I had a futuristic concept car called a Manta Ray, a Cobra Daytona,
and later the Cox Chaparral 2E (or was it a 2G? - one of those two winged winged
Can-Am cars).  The Chaparral wasn't the fastest - a little too heavy with too much
drag, but as a huge fan of Jim Hall/Chaparral, I had to have one.

There was also a track in nearby Hermosa Beach that had a 90 degree banked turn
(i.e., completely vertical.

I also had a couple of home sets.  First an HO one, and later a deluxe Revelle
1/32nd scale, four lane model - very cool.  I believe the latter came with a
Gull-wing Mercedes, a Corvette Stingray, a Jaguar XKE and one other I can't
recall.

Those were the days.

I was stuck in Anchorage, Alaska, but they did manage to have a couple
of tracks, too.  God, I used to drool over every issue of the Auto
World catalog I could get!

Los Angeles was like "The Promised Land" for slot car racers back
then.

If you were into Aurora HO, then search on "Model Motoring" and you'll
find someone's bought the license to the name and is manufacturing
track, cars, and complete kits once more.  There is also about a
billion new-old-stock Thunderjet chassis out there and you can buy
them all day for less than $10.00 a pop.  Several folks are casting
drop-dead gorgeous replicas of the original bodies as well as some
that never were, but darned well should've been.

You can still buy Revell track!  They sold the stuff to R.E.H.
Distributing in Ohio and he makes it and sells it as Riggen.  I think
North Coast Hobbies sell them.  R.E.H. is also the one who bought
something like 3 full tracter trailors full of  the Aurora chassis
when the company bailed out of the market.  (imagine how many chassis
it would take to fill three tractor trailers!)

And some are reliving them today.  Although if you want another Manta
Ray or La Cucaracha in mint condition, be prepared to hock an
offspring or something, the collectors market has gone nuts because of
old farts like us getting nostalgic about this stuff again...  LOL

If it was the GAS powered STring guided model, that would be the open top
jobbie with the moving rear wing...I 'think' that was the 2c.    I had that
little sucker...
I grew up a fan of slot cars and surfing..trouble was, I lived in a small
tiny town in the
far north eastern corner of Washington State...I was surrounded by desert
and no
population base to support such things as slot car track or RC races.
so...I never got to do either...
