GP2 Off the Shelf

I now have Microprose' Grand Prix 2 back on the hard-drive... last time
it was there was in July of '96.  The graphics back then were much to much
for my P133.  But now, thanks to the ol' Intel Celeron 300a running at 450
Mhz, I can now play GP2 in full speed 25 fps (max it'll let you I think) in
SVGA and it's a blast!  It may not be the "eye candy" that todays games are,
but it has such a great feel of really "sticking" to the road courses, that
I've yet to see in any other driving sim.  Most other ones you just slide
much to easily (I haven't driven these types of cars obviously, but it just
feels really right in GP2 from how I'd imagine it to be).  Since all my
current $ went into this upgrade to the 450 computer, I have to wait a
little while to by GPL, which I'm sure will be awesome based on on the
usenet posts.  But for now, GP2 is a blast, once again.  (much better than
on my old 133).  If your wondering about this and have a high end system now
too, load up GP2!  It's a heck of a lot of fun now.

Agreed! I loaded up GP2 last night on my new PII 400 system because of all the
problems I've had with the sound in F1RS and my Ensoniq soundcard. The game
rocks on this system but after F1RS and GPL the graphics just don't cut it for
me.

Yeah, the graphics are very dated, but it still has a great feel to it.

I'd probably run it on my 400 too, but never can get my Riva 128 to use
anything other than *60* hz for DOS refresh rates, and that flicker is
really annoying when you're used to 75-100 hz, so I usually end up sticking
to my Win 95 or Voodoo 2 stuff.

Because it don't use 3dfx
3d in gp2 is better than 3dfx!

Well when I found out about the time warp factor of GP2 that spoiled
it for me. If you set the graphics right down, for example, you can
actually do a lap at Monza in 1:25 Sim time vs 1:22 or 1:23 real time.
Or... put in too much detail and the same lap might take over 2:00
minutes real time! Sure you can mess around with the settings but
you'll find you need diff settings for every track. And for "multi,"
Why bother. GP2 is history. GPL rules! Oh and sim time in it = real
time. Whatever the detail level. Great job Papyrus!

My god, what do you expect, GP2 is nearly 3 years old, no such thing as 3D
accelerators then or DirectX or anything remotely like it, in it's day it
was ground breaking and still holds its own today, the tracks are still more
accurate than anything else I have seen and the ability to use rookie mode
to learn the tracks and still have fun has not been replicated in GPL, F1RS
or any other racing sim on the market. I really hope the rumours are true
about GP3 and if it is as big an improvement on GP2 as it was on GP1 then I
think we are in for something pretty special.

Peter,

I often make allowances for a programs shortcomings due to hardware
constraints at the time. Regarding the Time Warp effect I mentioned,
well, ICR1 and Nascar1 were out at about the same time and they locked
sim time to real time - just like GPL. To me there's no excuse for not
doing so. I'll get GP3 [only] if it corrects this problem.
