"Rally Championship " strange sound

G'day,

Just got this great sim the other day but there's one thing that's
annoying me. There's a popping sound that is continuously there, it
seems it could be part of the engine sound and is supposed  to be
there but I hope not. Are other's hearing this sound?
Thanks for any info.

Hi Tony,

I agree, what a great game! I'm surprised I haven't seen more talk of
it on this newsgroup. Excelent driving model, cool cars (adjustable
gear ratios, tires, etc.), all weather conditions (the rain and snow
look really cool, especially the lighting storms, and the fog's not
bad either), realistic tectures (tarmacs, gravel, mud, snow, gravel)
and 300 miles of interesting realistic tracks, lot's of variety (some
of those 15-20KM segments are grueling!).

After the disappointment of NFS 2 it's great to find a good new
racing/driving game. Rally Championship also has a great frame-rate in
640x480 on my P200 - at least 30fps, with no slowdowns at all in heavy
traffic. Very good sensation of speed.

Anyway, in answer to your question: the popping is supposed to be the
engine backfiring. But most people agree it is annoying and doesn't go
off at the right times. Fortunately there is a hack to remove it: just
replace "\RALLY\FILES\SNDS\FXPOP.RAW" file with a small non-empty file
(i.e., a small text file you can create with the EDIT command). The
popping will go away. Enjoy!

Thanks for the quick answer Joe :)
I just checked and sure enough the file's there. I'll try the hack
when I'm offline. RC is certainly fast, it hikes along on my P166 and
old ET4000 card. It'd be nice to see them use the graphic engine for
something else, like an F1 sim maybe.

Does anybody know when this sim will be released in the States?

That popping sound is what sega uses to replicate the "aquarium" valve
or sneeze valve, or blow-off valve, depending on whatever you know it
as.  Its purpose is to bleed off a couple of PSI of boost in a
Turbocharged system between shifts in order to keep the wastegate
from dumping your whole accumulation of boost.  This way, you retain
some pressure in the intake system without loosing the entire
quantity.

Yeah, I'm impressed with the performance too (on my P200) especially
after running that dog NFS2 (what a slow program!).

I'd like to see them add some NFS 1 type features, like driving with
traffic and cops.

Thanks Jon but I was referring to Europress Rally Championship, not
Sega. I didn't realise Sega's rally game had the same name.

I don't think they are talking about the Sega product!

FWIW, I was watching Top Gear Motorsport the other day and I noticed that
Europress (RC's publisher) was sponsoring one of the cars in one of the
races. I'm not sure which Formula it was (I think that it's Formula
Vauxhall). I don't know who the driver of the car was. So maybe we might
have a Formula Vauxhall or even Formula 3 sim? Why not, right. After all,
there have been kart "sims" before.
