Nascar Revolution: Buyer beware Part 2.

by Greg Cisk » Thu, 18 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I agree with rrevved for the most part. In fact the game is uninstalled
and ready to go back to babbages. I am a fairly big N2/NR1999
player. I do h2h with a friend at least one day per week (so I have
standards).

I had hope that Nascar Revolution would be the answer to the
maddening NR1999 DOS joystick routine re: FF wheels (it just
will not work). Nascar Revolution appeared to have it all. 17
tracks (including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway!!!) support
for Force Feedback ect... Even though rrevved said that the game
needed DX5 I was able to get it to work with DX6. I have a P2-450
with a 12MB CL Voodoo2 card and 128MB ram. I have DX6 installed
and the installation went fine. However every damn time I ran the game
it asked if I wanted to run D3D or Glide (DirectX 5 Glide!!!! what is
with that?). I chose Glide and was able to get it to run fine with DX6.
I also got several lockups (which never happen in other games). If
I run the game, exit and restart I get a black screen lockup. This
happened probably 5 times in an hour and 1/2.

Once the game was running in Glide I maxed out the graphics.
WOW it was a dog at 800x600 on the fastest PC available!!!!
I guess I needed SLI or something, but the framerate was OK
at 640x480. Until I went into the normal***pit/dashboard view.
Then I got a 'disconnected' feeling. The control was definitely
not the same as N2/NR1999. I guess it is as the others say
that the framerate just sucks in this view. But the front view without
the***pit flies...

I finally found that you can manually shift gears by going into the car
setup screen and selecting manual instead of automatic. I did not
find any command that would display the gear you were in (like the
's' key in NR1999).

Graphics:
Yes they are superb!!! You can see the other card bouncing up
and down as they hit bumps in the track. I ran C***te, Indy
and Martinsville. But since I was in the***pit view the
framerate was horrid. And the announcer stuff was maddening.
Add to that the fact that the engine sound ( I have a SBPCI64 which
should do Dolby sound I believe) completely sucked and the whole
thing was a mess. I ran NR1999 right after running revolution. No
contest, revolution is a nice looking DOG!!!!

Controls:
My TM-T2 wheel seemed to work fine except for one small thing.
I appeared to have little or no braking.

I had hopes that this game would be a true Nascar H2H replacement
for my friend and I but I simply don't see how I can tolerate the
glaring problems the game has. (Constant crashing, crappy sound
and horrid***pit framerates).

I am sure some will like the game. I will be keeping track of who
they are for future reference....

Glad I didn't pick it up, but once I saw that you have no control of your
pit stops, I wasn't going to waste my money or time.
