This message is for Papyrus, as it is my hope that the real reason for the
demo is for some real feedback. If not, then here's what I have to say
anyway.
After downloading, and unzipping properly, I was ready to run the program.
As with Papyrus' simulations in the pass, I ran SETUP immediately. I
noticed the Univbe thing doesn't work at all, at least from the Setup
screen, but the UVCONFIG did figure out I had a Matrox video card, but it
didn't say Millenium, it said something else, but that's ok. At least it
knows the chip, right? As for the sound config, Setup found the right
address, dma, and interrupt, but returned the message, "unknown sound card"
I happen to own a Pro Audio Spectrum sound card, which has worked just fine
in the past with Papyrus' software. I clicked "save sound configuration"
and was ready to motor.
I started the sim, and the title screen looked great. I clicked "options"
first, so I could set things up to drive with my Gravis joystick, manual
shifting, manual breaking, etc. At the very first screen from the
"options" menu, there was much flickering. I think this is the Univbe
driver kicking in, as I do not use this thing ever, for any software I own.
My Matrox just doesn't like Univbe, at least the older versions. I'm not
sure if the Matrox Millenium will ever utilize this type of driver, I guess
I should ask around. Anyway, the flickering was pretty serious sometimes.
After getting pass the "options" screens, where I was able to set
everything up the way I wanted it, I was ready to drive. I pulled outa the
pits, in practice, and my speakers started SCREECHING. I believe this is
supposed to be the spotters I've been reading about, and I'm a little
jealous. The noise was badly jarbled, but I took it for human speech, as it
was intermittant. Wonder what those fellows are saying.
I took a few laps, the graphics looked pretty good, I had a nice frame
rate, and the clouds look killer. I'm running a P150 btw.
Well, thanks for the demo, it ain't bad. I hope these comments help the
coders, and I'm looking foward to the final product, which I know will be
pretty nice considering the work Papyrus has done in the past.
