My initial N2002 impressions

Ok, loaded her up and was curious as to what would happen after seeing so
many different reports.
First, most of you probably know  my system by now, but for this posts sake
I shall state again.
EPoX 8KHA+ kt266a mb
Athlon XP 1600+
512 mb Crucial pc2100 ddr ram
GeForce3 Ti200 64 mb vid card ( Hercules) w/ Nvidia 23.11 drivers
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
Logitech Momo FF wheel
Windows XP Home

Install went pretty well, only issue I had was when it dropped me to the
calibration screen, I had no pedals an could not check the FF option. I
switched to Generic driver, still had no ff option of course as it doesn't
support it in generic. Switched back to direct input, now I had pedals in my
calibration routine ( seperate axis), and was able to check the FF option
and set it up.

Now, for my in game settings:
Graphics:
1280x960x32
D3D TnL Hal
Car Detail: High
Mirror: medium
Trackside: all
World: High
Drawing: 50%
Opp drawn ahead: 26
Opp drawn behind: 4
All graphics on except antisotopic filtering

Sound:
3d audio ( wth happened to eax?)
Sounds played: 20

First loaded up Lowes day testing. FPS were in the 60's-70's.  Car sound was
great.
Next, loaded up Lowes day single race - 42 opponents. In practice,
framerates were in the mid 40's up to mid 50's, hitting 60 on occasion.
Started a race, starting at the very back of the pack - worst case scenario
I would think - framerates at the lowest on pace lap and starting the race
were at 35. When field started spreading out got up into the mid 40's.
Again, full field of ai cars. Had an ai crash up ahead early on, involving 3
cars, lowest I saw my framerate get was 25. The combination of white and
black smoke from tires and engine damage looked really neat.
I then enabled antisotopic filtering just for the hell of it, cost me about
10 fps, and truthfully I can't see really any difference in visual quality,
so I disabled it again.
So, graphics wise it appears I am ok. My framerates should be even better
online, which really is where I will do most my racing.
Sound: As mentioned above, what's the deal with eax? Not supported in game?
Or does it automatically take advantage of eax if you have the hardware?
As far as any sound glitches, I have none. No static, no popping, no
cracking. The sound is truly awesome, no doubt the biggest improvement over
N4.
I have only run it about 30 minutes so far, have not had any lockups or
stuttering or anything of that nature, very smooth to date.

Well, that's my report from initial impression. Obviously I need to put a
lot more time into it. I'm not sure if the car drives easier or if their
just a little tighter. I can definitely at least rub a little better with
the ai than in N4. I sure hope online is the same in that regard. Hmm, wife
going out of town this weekend, maybe it's time I used that OLR account I
have been paying for :).

Well considering your system, you shouldn't have problems with your fps
:)

Now think of all the poor smoes (90% of Nascar Racing users?) stuck with
lowly PIII 866... <sigh> now is another time to upgrade.

Don

Since the readme cautioned against the 23.11s, did you try other drivers?

No, I have been using the 23.11's since their official release, and they
work great in all my other games. I did not want to change them unless I
aboslutely had to, and so far with N2002 I see no reason to on my system.

I've got the 23.11's too, and the very first time I went into the players
and opponent manager screen, it froze for about 30 seconds, but then kicked
back in, as the readme suggested it would.

Since then, no problems at all either, on a GF MX 2.

>How do you find the pedal unit of the Logi Momo - good for long races?
>I find the brake pedal induces shin splints in record time.

I think they are totally fantastic - just be sure to put a squashball
under the brake pedal (open the case and replace the brake spring with
the squashball, it stays perfect in place). After a couple of days
getting used to the Momo I broke ALL my records in GPL because the
wheel and pedals are so damn precise. And I spend about 2 hours on
racing each day, do long races once a week, so they are excellent for
long races too.

And no I don't work for Logi, just being very happy with my wheel :)

Yeah, pretty much same for me, I have gotten more used to them - but
eventually I'm probably going to get the dual axis switch for my TSW2 and
use it's pedals with my Momo.

Interesting, I have XP also. Maybe I need to give these Momo pedals more of
