GP2: Setups - where to start?

by clema » Sun, 11 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I've been messing around with setups quite a bit now, and although the
manual helps quite a bit, it doesn't go all the way in explaining how to
do a proper setup.
For example, when you are setting up the gears, how do you decide
whether it is better to reach 315kph very quickly and then remain at
this speed for a while, or to get up to 325kph, but taking a lot longer
to get there!?
And is there any benefit in having the gears spaced out equally, eg in
increments of 7 or 8, or gradually, 5,6,7,8,9 or 9,8,7,6,5? Or does it
depend on the corners of the circuit?

        Any takers?

My main mechanic/technician was hire away by a better team, so I can't
give you an answer for the above.  However, I would like to know also.

But before he left, he filled me in a little about this.  He said, "It
depends".  If the circuit has lots of slow 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear
corners, you will want to set the gear ratio in this range to match the
corners.  If you have to take the corner in 2nd, try to get the gap
between 1st & 2nd to match the entrance into the corner.  You want to be
at a good strong rpm to power out of the turn.  Then he left.
Anybody else have some more light to shed on this?

Since my Techie left me...  I've been looking over my performance data
and am getting confused.  If I am going down a long/fast/bumpy straight
and one wheel seems to have more suspension travel that the other, how
do I fix it.  Let's say that the right rear has a tendency to bounce up
and "slip".  Otherwise the ride height and travel is pretty straight.
Is this anything to worry about?  Or should I be playing with the
dampers (spring setting didn't seem to help)?

Also, when the front end seems to dance, before it sticks in a medium to
high speed corner, where should I start to look first?

Run some laps with each gearing setup and overlay the perf files on a graph.
The setup which gives the best average speed (for any given section of track)
should be readily apparent.

It's not about speed, it's about time (repeat that over and over).

If you can get to a top speed more quickly than a higher speed, then you
may or may not be saving time.

Take Monza for example.  My top speed was 206-207mph, but it took me
awhile to get there.  Usually peaking to 207 JUST before I hit the brakes
for the corners.

Now my top speed is 205-206, but I'm at that speed for a longer period of
time.

You can see the difference in my split times and line speed.  In my old
setup, I crossed the start/finish line at 199-200mph.  With my new gears,
I hit the line at 202-203mph.

My first split was usually 29.0-28.8.  Now with the new gears it is
28.8-28.4 (when I'm doing well).

If the clocks are lower, then the gears are better.  It's not about speed,
it's about time.  Never forget that.

More fast damper.  Less fast rebound.

I'll let you know once I fix mine.  ;)

Actually, I have the opposite problem.  The front sticks, then the back
slides slightly, then the front breaks loose slightly, then the back
slides out.  In other words, it oscillates in the corners.  Especially in
the Lesbos.

tee hee, the Lesbos... For a minute there I thought this was another 1-800
spam.  :)  Cute typo, Doug.
