Nascar modem racing

Nascar modem racing

I have an interesting problem when a buddy and I try to race over our
modems.

We can connect just fine but when we go to any track to practice; 1) he
will be in my car, and I will be in his car, and 2) I can drive around the
track with no problem but my buddy's car will not turn right, it just runs
down the pits and wrecks all the computer cars.

We have tried stripping down the modem strings so that there is no error
correction, compression or other stuff, and we are both running the same
version of Nascar (1.2).

I am using a T1 and he's using a T2 but I doubt that the wheels are causing
the problem.  I am able to run on Hawaii with no problem at all.

I know it is probably a simple solution but I have tried everything I can
think of with no results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Ken

I can answer question number one.  When you're both driving by
yourselves (running some AI race or practicing) you are the first
driver behind the pace car in the car set AND the drivers2.txt file.
When modem racing, the 'answering' player's car should be first in the
car set behind the pace car, and the 'calling' players' car should be
the second one behind the pace car.  You should both communicate
beforehand as to who is calling and who is receiving to make sure you
both have your cars in the right order.

SLOT    CALLING PLAYER CARSET   ANSWERING PLAYER CARSET
_________________________________________________________________
1       PACE CAR                        PACE CAR
2       ANSWERING PLAYER'S CAR  ANSWERING PLAYER'S CAR
3       CALLING PLAYER'S CAR    CALLING PLAYER'S CAR

Strangely enough, the DRIVERS2.TXT file can be left as is (with both
of you number one behind the pace car in your respective TXT files).

About number two, while modem racing I've noticed several instances
where my opponent's car seems to be going all over the track, and
sometimes I've entered the track after visiting the garage and my car
has been totalled, apparently by the other guy's car (I think this is
intentional, however  :)  )

Just let me clarify that this isn't official information, but an
observation from data I collected while modem racing.

Ken - with NASCAR 1.2, the answerer will be in the "94" car, while the
dialer will be in the "50" car ... so you're seeing expected behavior,
though we'd like to do better.

As for the problem with your friend not having control over the car, it
sounds like a joystick calibration problem ... perchance is your friend
running from a Windows DOS box, rather than DOS-exclusive ?
