After about 6 hours of tweaking and fiddleing...the P166, 64 Meg is
history. I'm now driving a Celeron 533 w/128 Meg RAM. Same Voodoo 2.

So I fired up GPL...WOAH!!!!!! It used to run 12-17 fps in
Training...35-36 now! This is a whole different beast. I think I'm in
love. Maybe the colors are even better, but I might be hallucinating.
I've said my goodbyes to my loved ones...8^).

That'll be *all* down to the CPU. GPL isn't a memory hog - 32 megs is
enough to run it fine, and all more does is gives you a bigger replay
buffer.

Mind you, a Voodoo 3 would give even better results (and, in the UK
at least, is a lot cheaper than a GeForce). My machine (Celeron 400,
64 megs, V3 2000) can easily run a steady 36fps at 800x600 during a
20-car race once the first half-lap is over. Nice!

It's been about an hour now, and after getting over the "wowie" effect
(driving into walls while looking around at everything), I did about 8
seroius laps at Monza...and took another second off my PB. 1:34:3*
now...and another step up at GPLRank...The sense of speed and control (or
lack of) is amazing. Man, what I've been missing...8^)...am I conveying
the enthusiasm I'm experencing here?

Hey J.P. Different animal altogether isn't it? Your in trouble now.
You could probably get another significant increase by upgrading that
Voodoo2.

Oooohhhh yes! I started with GPL on a P133 with a Voodoo 1, so I know
exactly what you mean!

Seems the ***ion has jumped to another level JP . You'll soon be climbing
the ladder at GPLRank now . Depending on your mobo , you could see up to
800mhz with that chip with some overclocking to 100mhz bus speed . It would
certainly help with a 19 car race offline. Congrats on the new system
though.

You want to be *really* happy?  Get a Voodoo 3.  Also if that Celeron
533 is one of the new Celeron II's, you can easily overclock it to
800Mhz just by switching to 100Mhz FSB.  The .18micron CeleronII's run
much cooler than the original Celerons (they're basically cache-
crippled Coppermine PIII's).

Welcome the Papyrus-driven upgrade club ;)!
