Dave...
Include your system specs with each "it don't work" post......I'm not the
only one probably not willing to go through a Google ras search....to see
what mobo you have, or what operating system, what video card...and what
video card driver's you are currently using, every time you post your
problems. Just trying to give you a "hint" why you don't get more help.
What are you running N2K2 in (what res, what renderer) and have you made
sure you don't have anisotropic filtering turned on (see my spec sheet for
where "both" places are that you must turn it off). Have you done your swap
file.....or does Windows still have it?
Fast Writes....and SBA (Side Band Addressing)....are they both turned off
(see my spec sheets)?
Then....assuming for the briefest of moments....lol.....that you have
everything mentioned above set right. Here's what to try:
Take the side of your CPU....get a floor fan.....blow cold air in your case
and go run N2K2. If it don't lock up....then your problem is a "heat
problem" and its probably the video card that's overheating (could be the
CPU, though).
TP
I had an afterthought.
Didn't you say you had updated the BIOS on your mobo? If so, set the BIOS
"Exactly" like my spec sheet says, and don't change it back if your system
locks up. Those settings are regular and normal......and if any of them
were causing lockups....it would be because you have something set
incorrectly somewhere else. Okay?

Where is your guide posted Tom? I had it at one point but can't find it now.
Thanks,
Dan

Well It always pays to sit down and chew on a subject for a while. I
was comparing N2k2 to F1 2k1. Well that was NOT a good comparo. F1 is D3d
and N2k2 was running in Open GL. A quick check of Tom's tweek guide showed
OPENGL should have x2 AGP not x4. Just ran a half hour in n2k2, stopping
for tires etc and had zero hiccups this time. sometimes the SMALLEST
thingie can really mess up your day.
Now I get to repeat most of what I've already done today and start
resetting the rest of the bios to once again match TP's tweek guide.
Of course I'll let y'all know if I BREAK it again.

As a reminder to you....and to others who download that "tweaks" Excel
sheet........those are settings that I use for my system(s). While many of
them would be universal, some would not be. The "divergence" would increase
if you had an Intel platform (vs. an AMD platform). You should take those
tweaks and settings only as a guideline and be responsible for knowing which
of them (if any) might not be applicable for your system.
With regard to the BIOS settings.....those are what I would consider
"conservative" but normal settings.....they've been recommended by many, for
quite some time. With regard to the AGP port setting, I've never found 4X
AGP to produce more than a few additional FPS or 3DMrk scores of maybe 2 or
3% higher....but it *always* introduces a degree of instability (on AMD
platforms that I've built). So, by default.....I now pretty much always
keep it at 2X AGP.
Glad to hear you're getting your system probs under control.

Just ran a 10% weekend at Bristol night. 10 minute practice: ran some
laps, sat in the pits and then ran some more. Qaulifying. Then a full
warmup where I sat not in the pits but the setup screen with the replay
window showing the field. Joined near the end of the session. Then a 50
lap race with 1 caution, lapping cars rubbing and no lockups in opengl. I
DID reset my vidcard to the default speed and while I lost some fps, I seem
to have gained a stable opengl system again.
Now I'll push things a little bit to gain a few fps back. And hopefully
sit on that.
